Modules Offered

Students at XJTLU can study Japanese through various pathways tailored to their academic programmes or personal goals. We offer credit-bearing language modules; non-credit-bearing language modules under XJTLU’s Extended Study Scheme (ESS), which allows students to study modules outside their enrolled academic programmes; and credit-bearing content modules. Our offerings cater to learners of different proficiency levels, from beginner to upper-intermediate. Additionally, we welcome undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in acquiring Japanese language skills.

Language modules

Our eight credit-bearing Japanese language modules range from JPL001 for beginners – at the CEFR-A1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale – to JPL008 for intermediate learners (at the CEFR-B1 level). Among these, the two modules at the CEFR-A1 level, JPL001 and JPL002, are optional and primarily offered to Year 1 students to build foundational Japanese language skills. Students pursuing a BA International Business with a Language typically must study the modules at the CEFR-A2 through CEFR-B1 levels: JPL003 through JPL008. Students from other study programmes are also welcome to continue Japanese studies if they have available credits.

Classes adopt a student-centred, interactive, and communicative approach, enabling students to practise reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through real-world topics such as family, hobbies and interests, seasons and weather, and holidays.

These modules use the “Marugoto“ textbook series published by the Japan Foundation and prioritise communication in Japanese from the first lesson. At the end of each chapter, the textbook guides students to reflect on their progress – such as whether they have gained the ability to discuss hobbies or daily routines.

XJTLU students may log in to the e-Bridge Portal for module specifications.

Content modules

In addition to our core language curriculum, the Japanese Language Division provides interdisciplinary, culture-focused modules tailored to student interests.

The credit-bearing Japan Through Anime module requires no prerequisites or a specific level of Japanese proficiency. Designed as an accessible gateway to Japanese culture and society, the module uses anime and manga as primary media to examine themes such as traditions, social norms, and values. Through discussions and interactive activities, students will analyse cultural elements embedded in the works while fostering intercultural awareness and enriching their cultural identity.
