Knowledge and skills
Graduates of MSc IESIO will gain knowledge and core skills in:
- Advanced technology application: applying manufacturing, materials, AI, IoT, and data-analysis knowledge to solve complex engineering and industrial problems;
- Critical analysis and systems thinking: framing complex operational challenges, evaluating interdependencies, and developing evidence-based solutions across industrial ecosystems;
- Research and innovation: formulating rigorous questions, selecting appropriate methods, conducting experimental or analytical investigations, and evaluating the feasibility, ethics, and impact of proposed solutions;
- Product and industrial solution design: integrating technology, design, and Industry 4.0 principles while considering lifecycle, sustainability, accessibility, safety, and security;
- Industrial leadership and business judgement: leading engineering initiatives, applying engineering economics and finance, and using entrepreneurial frameworks to evaluate projects, interventions and new ventures;
- Collaboration and communication: working effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders in diverse teams and communicating ideas in industrial and academic settings; and
- Independent project delivery: planning and executing advanced internship or research work with increasing autonomy, critical reflection and professional accountability.
MSc IESIO is designed for engineers who want to do more than master individual technologies. It develops the ability to connect advanced engineering, data, artificial intelligence, systems thinking, and industrial operations, and to turn that knowledge into responsible solutions for complex real-world challenges. Through industry-led studios and flexible industry and research capstones, students can shape their learning around their ambitions while building the judgement, leadership, and adaptability needed in a rapidly changing technological world.

Graduates are prepared for technical, operational, managerial, and innovation-focused roles across engineering and manufacturing. Potential career pathways include technical specialists, intelligent manufacturing or Industry 4.0 engineers, manufacturing engineers, industrial engineers, systems engineers, data or operations analysts, project managers, engineering managers, and research and development roles. The programme's unique combination of technical breadth, systems thinking, business judgement, and leadership also supports careers in technology and operations consulting, business development, and entrepreneurship. Its research training and dissertation pathways also provide a strong foundation for doctoral study and research careers.
Overview
The MSc in Intelligent Engineering Science and Industrial Operations (MSc IESIO), offered by the School of Intelligent Manufacturing Ecosystem, is a 24-month, full-time programme rooted in manufacturing engineering and designed around a transdisciplinary approach. It brings together engineering science, industrial operations, and innovation practice to prepare graduates to solve complex operational problems and contribute to the design and transformation of modern industrial ecosystems.
In the first year, students develop future-ready knowledge in manufacturing and materials, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analysis, product design, systems thinking, and research and innovation. The Bespoke Industrial Studios connect this learning to real-world scenarios, with input from industry professionals and opportunities for experiential, project-based learning.
In the second year, students can shape their capstone experience by choosing an internship or research project in each of two semesters. This enables industry-focused, research-focused, or mixed pathways, supported by structured project approval, academic supervision, and industry supervision or mentoring. Internship placements are subject to availability; students who do not secure a suitable external placement can undertake an equivalently supported on-campus research project.
Across the programme, students are encouraged to consider sustainability, responsible innovation, inclusive design, lifecycle impacts, and the safe and secure use of digital and industrial technologies. The result is a broad technical and professional education that develops analytical judgement, leadership, communication, and entrepreneurial capability.
