Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University emerged as a result of the convergence of the city’s widening open-door policy and globalisation in education. The rapid economic development of Suzhou and its neighbouring regions attracted the two well-known parent universities – Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and the University of Liverpool in the UK – to establish a new international university in Dushu Lake Higher Education Town, Suzhou Industrial Park, offering degree programmes in the subject areas of science, engineering, and management. The University is the first of such kind of cooperation between two strong partner institutions, approved by the Ministry of Education. The University’s vision is To become a research-led international university in China and a Chinese university recognized internationally, with its unique features in teaching & learning, research, social service, education and management philosophy; and the University aims to train and equip its graduates with the skills and knowledge that are required for the international calibre of management and technology, including a good command of English, a high level of creativity, an enthusiasm for working both independently and in a team, a sound understanding of their chosen subject, and the acquisition of career-related specialised knowledge and values.

Suzhou

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is located in Suzhou, an ancient city renowned as “A Paradise on Earth”. The city traces its history back to the Chunqiu Period and preserves the unique characteristics of the southern China ancient town, marked by intersecting canals and alleys, and dark-roofed buildings painted with soft pastels. The city has rich cultural heritage and is particularly famous for its distinctive architecture of Chinese ancient gardens, nine of which were listed as World Cultural Heritage, including Zhuozheng Yuan (The Humble Administrator's Garden), Liu Yuan (The Lingering Garden), and Wangshi Yuan (The Master of Nets Garden). While preserving its cultural traditions, Suzhou is also a modern city that has recently seen rapid development. The city has kept a 15% GDP growth rate in the past years and in 2005 its total GDP value was ranked fourth in China, after Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
