Abstract
In 2026, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) celebrates the 20th anniversary of its founding. Since its inception, driven by the vision of becoming " a research-led international university in China and a Chinese university recognised internationally for its unique features in learning and teaching, research, social services, and education management." XJTLU has continuously explored the future model of universities by integrating education, digitalizing instruction, collaborating with industries, and fostering international talent development.
Standing at the threshold of a new two-decade journey, we ask: By 2046, how will higher education respond to an increasingly uncertain, complex, and technology-saturated world? As artificial intelligence and climate change intertwine and evolve, does the role of the university still merely confine to knowledge transmission? What capabilities and qualities will students need to not only adapt to society, but also actively shape a fairer, more sustainable, and creative future?
In recent years, a growing number of universities have attempted to break the boundaries of traditional education. By driving learning through real-world projects, promoting interdisciplinary integration, and deepening industry-academia collaboration, they are building an educational ecosystem that supports lifelong growth. These practices mark a fundamental shift: from "imparting knowledge" to "cultivating the whole person," and from "transmitting information" to "co-creating value." The goal of education is no longer just about what students "know," but rather what they "can do," for what causes they are "willing to take responsibility," and what positive changes they can bring to the world.
To this end, XJTLU will host the 11th Annual Conference on Innovation in Higher Education in May 2026. Under the theme "Higher Education towards 2046: From Knowledge Transmission to Value Creation," this conference aims to invite university leaders, frontline educators, education researchers, industry partners, and policymakers from across the nation to gather in Suzhou. Together, we will explore how to drive teaching reforms through real-world challenges, build a new ecosystem of collaborative education among universities, industries, and society, and reshape the form and mission of future universities. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate a new generation capable of creating value and addressing complex challenges.
Additionally, the on-site final of the 11th XJTLU National University Teaching Innovation Award will be held concurrently, showcasing an annual feast of teaching innovation. We sincerely invite our peers in higher education across the country to stand at this milestone of the 20th anniversary, look ahead to 2046, and co-create the new landscape of future education.
