On December 6, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s School of Film and TV Arts hosted the “Film Industrialization – Reflection and Practice” themed series of activities, attracting students and film professionals from various universities and sparking a new wave in the film industry at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.
In the afternoon, at the cinema in the School of Film and TV Arts building, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, Dean of the School of Film and TV Arts and Associate Dean of the Academy of Film and Creative Technology, hosted the series of activities. In her opening remarks, she highlighted that film industrialization has become a crucial engine driving the development of Chinese cinema. To better explore this topic, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University had invited senior experts from the industry as well as representatives from renowned companies such as Zhunzheng and Sony.
Industrial Film Imaging Creation Process Shared
The first lecture of the afternoon featured Liu Yin and Liu Yang as guest speakers. Liu Yin, a cinematographer, has worked on notable films such as The Wandering Earth, The Wandering Earth 2, Hi, Mom, The Battle at Lake Changjin, and Knife's Edge. Liu Yang, CEO of Sanjie Film and the DIT (Digital Imaging Technician) Process Director, has worked on films including The Great Wall, The Wandering Earth, The Wandering Earth 2, My People, My Country, and Mozart in Outer Space.
Liu Yin’s talk, titled “Step by Step,” detailed his career journey, describing how he gradually implemented and refined the industrialization of film through various projects.
Liu Yang provided an in-depth analysis of the imaging creation process for The Wandering Earth 2, focusing particularly on the DIT process. He demonstrated the most advanced domestic technologies and equipment and shared their innovative applications in The Wandering Earth 2.
During the gift exchange segment with the school, Liu Yin and Liu Yang presented copies of the Chinese Film Digital Production Specifications and The Making of The Wandering Earth.
Zhunzheng and Hollywood Colour Management Workflow Unveiled
The second lecture of the afternoon featured Zhou Jianfei, Sales Manager and Solutions Engineer at Zhunzheng, and Zhou Liang, Colour Management Engineer at Zhunzheng. The two professionals provided a detailed analysis of the colour management workflow within the Hollywood industrial system, showcasing leading colour management solutions in the industry.
Sony Delivers Insights into Film Camera Technology
Finally, Xue Yansong from Sony revealed the performance and operational techniques of Sony’s film camera product line. Through vivid case studies and technical details, he provided a deeper understanding of the technology behind film cameras.
Event Highlight: Kees Van Oostrum’s Appearance
A major highlight of the event was the appearance of Dutch cinematographer Kees Van Oostrum. As the former President of the American Society of Cinematographers and the International Cinematographers Guild, Kees has extensive experience, having worked on over 60 films, including Emmy Award-winning productions. He not only addressed the audience but also toured the School of Film and TV Arts building, engaging warmly with guests, faculty, and students. Kees’s presence greatly enhanced the event and allowed students to experience the expertise of an internationally renowned cinematographer up close.
Equipment Showcase and Operational Workshop Ignite Film Creation Inspiration
Throughout the afternoon, the second floor of the School of Film and TV Arts building became a hotspot for the film industrialization equipment showcase and operational workshops. Displays from Shenzhen Zhunzheng Digital Video Co., Sony China, Cooke China, Shanghai Yueliu, Shenzhen Aitush Innovation Technology Co., and DJI Innovation attracted numerous students and film professionals. They showcased the latest equipment and technologies, offering students rare hands-on experience opportunities.
In addition to students from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, attendees from Suzhou University’s School of Media, Shanghai Normal University, and Jiangnan University also joined the film industrialization feast. During the event, guests and students engaged in deep discussions, sharing insights and experiences.
The “Film Industrialization – Reflection and Practice” themed series of activities hosted by the School of Film and TV Arts not only provided students with a platform to interact with industry professionals but also offered a deeper understanding of the trends and cutting-edge technologies in film industrialization. The school will continue to organise such activities to bridge the gap between academia and industry, driving the development of the film industry.
