XJTLU Global hosted an induction session on 23 February to welcome nearly 100 exchange and non-degree Chinese language students from around the globe. The induction covered essential aspects for international students’ adaptation to university life at XJTLU and in China. Topics included communication contacts, visa compliance, law, health and safety, insurance, online learning tools, career development, counseling services, and student activities.

Markus Davis, International Student Support Officer at XJTLU Global, informed students about three upcoming career training workshops open to all international students covering job applications, cover letters and job interviews.

“We will also arrange company visits for international students interested in employment opportunities in China, so you will know more about employer expectations, salaries, and visa requirements,” he said.

Jianping Ge, Deputy Director of XJTLU Global, introduced the diverse student clubs available.

“The University has around 200 student clubs, and one of them is the International Language Culture Association. It’s a club dedicated to hosting events for international students,” he said.

Motivations and expectations

During the session, students shared their reasons for coming to China and studying at XJTLU.

“I think XJTLU would be the best destination for learning Chinese language and culture,” said Nilofar Paiwand Ali, an undergraduate global management student from Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada.

“In addition, XJTLU has all the courses that I need, such as modules about supply chain management, project management and international trade. So, it’s a perfect choice for me,” she added.

Noemi Cattelan, an Italian student pursuing an MA Language and Management to China at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, is an exchange student at XJTLU. She said she wants to immerse herself in the Chinese-speaking environment: “I’ve been studying Chinese for ten years, and I’m eager to use it in real-life situations rather than just in textbooks.”

Géry Duroyon, an exchange student pursuing a master’s degree at NEOMA Business School, France, said he wants to learn about business in China: “What I look forward the most at XJTLU is discovering more about China and Chinese language, and deepening my understanding of business.”
