On 18 September 2024, the School of Science at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) held its UG Induction at SD102 and welcomed an unprecedented number of 336 new undergraduate and outstanding students across various science disciplines. The incoming class includes 51 students in Environmental Science, 45 in Applied Chemistry, 123 in Biological Sciences and 117 in Bioinformatics.
Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science, delivered a welcome speech and shared his ambitious vision for the new academic year. Dr Lifeng Ding, Director of Global Engagement and Community Outreach and Ms. Dandan Zhao from the Student Affairs Office of XJTLU were also present to provide guidance and support to all students.
Currently, the School of Science offers four full-time undergraduate programmes: BSc Biological Sciences, BSc Bioinformatics, BSc Applied Chemistry, and BSc Environmental Science.
Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science encouraged everyone to value their study time and networking at XJTLU. He also emphasized the importance of active engagement in the classroom and English language mastery as key factors for success at XJTLU and beyond.
“Engagement is not just about showing up, it's about the active, meaningful interactions that you build and the community network and support that you cultivate as part of your successful educational journey. And language, specifically English in our context, is not just a tool for communication; it's the gateway to global opportunities in science, business, and academia. Embrace these two critical elements, and you will pave the way for a future filled with potential and achievement.” Professor John Moraros said.
After the School-level induction, each of the four programmes (Environmental Science, Applied Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Bioinformatics), also provided a more targeted introduction to their respective undergraduate programmes and informative seminar to their students.
This academic year (2024/25) promises to be an especially important one for the students and faculty in the School of Science. Much of the recent success of the School in the student recruitment and achievement fronts can be attributed to the strong bond, close relationships and commitment to excellence forged between its faculty and students. This relationship-rich environment is pivotal for nurturing students, especially at the undergraduate level, who can take risks, learn from mistakes, and develop in a constructive manner under the mentorship of their teachers. It is these trusting relationships, that form the bedrock for the sustained growth and success for our School of Science and XJTLU.
