Training Review: Build Your Career Ecosystem - Networking

25 Mar 2026

The development of an effective professional network is an indispensable process for young professionals, especially when they first enter the workplace. A professional network is an essential component of the professional ecosystem involving the active establishment and maintenance of various professional relationships in work settings to gain support, feedback, and opportunities throughout your career. These relationships may include colleagues, supervisors, subordinates, clients, suppliers and other professionals in your field.
The "Build Your Career Ecosystem: Networking" course is the second course in the IBSS Postgraduate Upskilling (PGUP) training programme, designed and delivered by the transferable skills training specialists of the IBSS Work Placement, Employability and Career (WEC) Development Team. This thematic course starts by exploring proactive motivation, distinguishing between dialogue and discussions, and fostering altruism in interpersonal relationships. Participants fill out "Me at this moment" and "Future Me" name cards, integrating vivid cases and stories to guide IBSS postgraduates in building their professional ecosystem. The training also features a roundtable conversation practice area, and the integration of both teaching and practice has received unanimous praise from students.

Course Review

During the training, we covered topics such as how to stimulate proactive motivation, understanding the differences between dialogue and discussions, and the key components of job searching. Additionally, we introduced techniques and strategies for building a professional network, such as accumulating conversation topics for one's "Small Talk Resume". We also encouraged participants to organise their core past experiences by filling out their own "Me" experience cards and practicing their ice-breaking conversation skills in a roundtable simulation session after learning relevant techniques.

Mrs Yidan Liu, IBSS WEC Team Transferable Skills Training Specialist, provided students with a useful definition for networking. Building on three fundamental aspects of networking, she worked to guide students in establishing a positive networking mindset. This spanned the development of altruism in interpersonal relationships, acquiring practical wisdom through dialogues, and cultivating proactive motivation.

Under her guidance, students filled out their own profiles by reviewing their life experiences, thinking about how their strengths and talents could help and influence others, and sharing their own experiences of establishing connections with others.

Participants are showing their stories

After the first part of the course, students eagerly showcased their "Me" experience cards and generously shared their talent stories.

Subsequently, the team designed a 15-minute roundtable simulation session using a realistic scenario, allowing students to quickly break the ice using the skills they had learned. We encouraged them to engage in peer-to-peer communication in a relaxed and free atmosphere, confidently showcasing their communication skills and social abilities. During this process, trainers and facilitators provided feedback and guidance, helping students better understand the importance of building a professional network in the workplace and offering practical techniques and strategies to support this.

Course Feedback

During this course, students not only mastered practical workplace social skills and strategies, but also underwent a profound transformation in their understanding of professional networking. Before the course, many students had misconceptions about establishing professional networks, focusing more on "how to network" rather than "why to network."

After the course, many students' perceptions of workplace networking changed significantly, with greater emphasis placed on altruism and helping others. They overcame their fear of conversation, set future goals based on their strengths, and triggered their social motivation and needs. They gradually realised that genuinely maintaining interpersonal relationships could build their professional ecosystem from the inside out, clarifying their boundaries, respecting and accepting their feelings. They no longer regarded professional networking as a useless social entertainment activity, but instead considered it as equally important a workplace skill as technical expertise.
