As Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) celebrates its 20th anniversary, the University has launched a special alumni story series under the “Next Together” global initiative. The series highlights the diverse career journeys and personal growth of XJTLU’s outstanding graduates.
This edition features Clarine Beryl, from Indonesia, who studied BEng Intelligent Robotics Engineering with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism at XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) (XEC) from 2021 to 2025. Today, she works as an Assistant Manager (Overseas Business Development) at PGM System Ltd. She shares her learning experiences at XJTLU and how they prepared her for a career without boundaries.

Q: Why did you choose XJTLU and BEng Intelligent Robotics Engineering with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism?
A: I first learned about XJTLU through an education fair. What attracted me was the futuristic campus as well as the opportunity to receive an international education in China. China is emerging as a global technology hub, and I wanted to experience firsthand how technology was integrated into everyday life while also gaining exposure to Chinese culture.
I have always enjoyed building things and was particularly interested in hardware. Robotics appealed to me because it combines mechanics, electronics, programming, and intelligent systems. At the same time, I believed technology alone is not enough. Great innovations create impact only when they solve real problems and can be successfully implemented. That’s why the combination of engineering and entrepreneurial thinking immediately stood out to me.
Q: What’s your most memorable experience at XJTLU?
A: One of my most memorable experiences was leading a team in the module “Futurology and Business Opportunities”, where we developed and pitched the concept of a visual adaptive grasping technology for a robotic arm. As team leader, I coordinated our project, conducted market research, and presented our idea to the judging panel. Working closely with my teammates helped me improve how I communicate ideas, integrate different perspectives, and translate concepts into practical solutions. Our team eventually was recognised as the top project in Roadshow Session Four, which remains one of my proudest memories at XJTLU.
Beyond the coursework itself, the experience pushed me to think beyond technical solutions and focus more on real-world value and impact. It also led to an invitation to join X3 Co-Venture, the startup hub of XEC, where we received structured support to further develop student-led ideas, including access to mentorship, incubation guidance, and funding for early-stage validation and experimentation. This gave me a more concrete understanding of how ideas can move from classroom projects to real-world applications.

Q: How did your career journey begin after graduation?
A: My career journey began somewhat unexpectedly. During my final year at XJTLU, I attended a campus recruitment fair in Shanghai after learning about it through opportunities shared by the School of Robotics. What started as a simple visit out of curiosity led to conversations with representatives from my current company, followed by interviews and eventually a job offer.
Today, I work in international business development for intelligent manufacturing technologies. In some ways, this role is a natural extension of what I learned at XJTLU. While studying robotics, I was also encouraged to explore entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership opportunities, which broadened my perspective beyond engineering alone. My work now involves connecting technology with industry needs, helping manufacturers improve productivity and efficiency while supporting overseas market development. It has been a rewarding journey that allows me to continue learning from both the technical and business sides of innovation.

Q: In what way has the education at XJTLU influenced your career and personal growth?
A: XJTLU helped me discover my interest in bridging technology and business. Through engineering projects, entrepreneurship activities, competitions, and leadership experiences, I was able to explore both areas and understand how technology can create value in the real world. These experiences not only strengthened my technical knowledge but also developed my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
This reflects XJTLU’s Syntegration approach, which encourages students to connect different disciplines and perspectives. Today, that mindset continues to shape my career as I work at the intersection of technology, industry, and business.
Q: What motivates you to stay engaged with XJTLU and its alumni community?
A: One of the things I value most about XJTLU is the people I met during my time there. Many of my closest friends, mentors, and professional connections today are part of the XJTLU community. Staying connected allows us to learn from one another, share experiences, and continue growing together. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities XJTLU provided, and that motivates me to stay engaged and give back whenever I can.

Q: What advice would you give to current students?
A: My advice is to stay open-minded, explore, and make the most of every opportunity. Some of the experiences that shaped me came from the opportunities I never planned for and the moment I stepped outside of my comfort zone. At the same time, keep learning beyond the classroom, develop both technical and communication skills, and take time to understand how your knowledge can address real-world challenges. The more experiences you gain, the easier it becomes to find a path that truly suits you.
Q: Finally, what message would you like to leave for XJTLU on its 20th anniversary?
A: Congratulations to XJTLU on its 20th anniversary!
Thank you for creating an environment that encourages students to explore, challenge themselves, and grow beyond the classroom. Many of the experiences that had the greatest impact on my life began with opportunities that XJTLU made possible. I am proud to be part of this community and look forward to seeing XJTLU continue to inspire future generations of students.
