1. New strategies of drug development for metabolic diseases

On 10 June 2021, the event themed “Drug R&D Strategy and Layout for New Generation of Glucose Metabolism and Its Derived Diseases” brought together scientists, clinicians, financial investors, and professors from XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the latest strategies in drug research and development, clinical challenges, and future directions in treating glucose metabolism disorders and related diseases.

Dr. Tong Wang, Chief Scientist at Simcere-Tai Kang Biotechnology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., delivered a keynote speech analyzing the current landscape of the diabetes market and sharing insights into the latest advancements in innovative drug development for glucose metabolism diseases, including obesity and cardiovascular conditions. During the roundtable discussion, experts exchanged views on clinical treatment demands, innovative drug pipelines, and market strategies, emphasizing the necessity of multi-target drug development and the challenges of industrialization.

This event fostered collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals, strengthening the bridge between scientific research and real-world applications in metabolic disease therapeutics.

2. Pharmaceutical Considerations and Technology Transfer in Chemical Drug Development

On 10 May 2023, Dr. Zhengming Du, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Nanjing Orien Pharmaceutical, was invited to XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy to share insights on “Pharmaceutical Considerations and Technology Transfer in Chemical Drug Development.”

During his talk, Dr. Du provided a comprehensive overview of key pharmaceutical concerns throughout different stages of drug development, analyzing critical aspects such as active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) selection, manufacturing process optimization, and quality control. He further explored technology transfer processes, evaluation criteria, and industrialization challenges using real-world industry case studies. Dr. Du emphasized that effective technology transfer is crucial for ensuring production stability and directly impacts a drug’s clinical value and market competitiveness.

This event facilitated knowledge exchange between academia and industry, offering valuable insights for researchers and students while fostering potential collaborations between universities and pharmaceutical enterprises in innovative drug research and commercialization.

3. Adipose tissue expandability as determinant of Healthy/Unhealthy obesity

On 18 October 2023, Professor Antonio Vidal-Puig, Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and Professor of Molecular Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Cambridge, visited XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy to deliver a lecture on “Adipose Tissue Expandability as a Determinant of Healthy/Unhealthy Obesity.”

Professor Vidal-Puig introduced his team’s research using experimental mouse models and clinical samples to investigate the role of adipose tissue expansion in obesity-related metabolic diseases. He highlighted how fat storage capacity and metabolic function determine an individual’s susceptibility to obesity-related disorders, including insulin resistance and cardiovascular complications. His team proposed that increasing the mass and activity of human thermogenic adipose tissue could be a valuable strategy for treating obesity and its metabolic complications.

This lecture provided new perspectives on obesity and metabolic diseases, contributing to academic exchange in the field and offering valuable insights for future therapeutic strategies.

4. Synergistic Effects of Stem Cells and Immune Cells in Tissue Regeneration and Repair

On 20 November 2024, XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy invited Prof. Yufang Shi, Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Director of the Institute for Translational Medicine at Soochow University, to deliver a lecture titled “Synergistic Effects of Stem Cells and Immune Cells in Tissue Regeneration and Repair”. The lecture systematically elaborated on the immunomodulatory mechanisms of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in inflammatory microenvironments and their potential in clinical translation.

5. Basic Research and Translational Applications of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells and Organoids

On 30 April 2025, Dr. Fei Zhu, Associate Professor at the XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy, delivered an academic presentation on “Basic Research and Translational Applications of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells and Organoids”. The talk focused on the reprogramming mechanisms of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) and recent advances in the translational applications of organoids in chronic disease treatment and drug screening.

6. Pathogenesis and Intervention Strategies for Neurodegenerative Diseases

On 15 May 2025, XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy invited Prof. Zheng Ying from Soochow University to deliver a lecture on “Pathogenesis and Intervention Strategies for Neurodegenerative Diseases”. The presentation focused on cutting-edge research on the interaction between disease-associated proteins and mitochondrial quality control systems in conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as related therapeutic interventions.
