Introduction to Mao Zedong Thought and the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics

This module is a compulsory Marxist political theory course for higher education students and a core component of the political theory curriculum in colleges and universities. It comprehensively discusses the scientific significance, formation, and developmental processes of Mao Zedong Thought, the guiding significance, and the principles and policies of building socialism with Chinese characteristics. Through this learning, students master the theoretical achievements of the sinicisation of Marxism, understand the Party’s line, principles, and policies, and establish a correct worldview, outlook on life, and values. Moreover, students are encouraged to apply Marxist perspectives to enhance their ability to analyse and resolve practical issues.

Basic Principles of Marxism

This module is central to the ideological and political education curriculum in universities. It comprises three key components: Marxist philosophy, Marxist political economics, and scientific socialism, while studying the holistic, systematic, and collaborative nature of Marxism. Through the introduction to its formation, dissemination, and the sinicisation of Marxism, the module guides students to comprehend real-world issues from a Marxist perspective, cultivating their ability to apply scientific methodologies to practical problems.

Outline of Modern Chinese History

The module Outline of Modern Chinese History is a requirement set by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Ministry of Education. It primarily teaches the history of China’s social development from modern times, focusing on the Communist Party’s leadership in resisting foreign aggression, overthrowing reactionary rule, striving for national independence, and implementing socialist revolution, construction, and reform. The aim is to equip students with a foundational understanding of national history and conditions, helping them to grasp the inherent laws of social development in modern China. This module introduces the historical context of modernization and guides students through the process of achieving Chinese-style modernisation, thereby enhancing their confidence in the socialist path, theoretical frameworks, institutional structures, and cultural foundations.

Ideological and Moral Cultivation and Legal Basis

The module is a compulsory general education module aimed at four-year undergraduate students in ordinary universities. This module provides targeted education on the correct outlook on life, values, morality, and legal system, guiding college students to establish lofty ideals, cultivate noble sentiments, follow and inherit the excellent moral traditions of the Chinese nation, construct noble ideological and moral character, good legal literacy, scientific value standards, and correct behavioral norms. Through the study of this module, students will master the basic knowledge of law, correctly understand and master the essence of law and the basic content of current laws, laying a foundation for the correct implementation of laws and conscious compliance with them. The main content of this module includes the relationship between morality and law, constitution, criminal law, civil law, marriage law, company law, contract law, labor law, intellectual property law, litigation law, and so on.

 

Situation and Policy

This module is a required component of ideological and political theory in universities and other higher education institutions. It serves as a primary avenue for students to study current situations and policies, playing a crucial role in their ideological education. The module guides college students to judge the changes and development of the situation scientifically from a global and strategic perspective, to accurately understand the Party’s theories, routes, guidelines, and policies, and learn how to observe and analyze the situation, to understand and implement the policies with the Marxist position, viewpoints, and methods. This module assists and encourages college students to comprehend the nation, the world, and its citizens; to precisely identify the social development trend; and to build their problem-solving, analysis, and recognition skills.

Self-management and Mental Health

The module is a general education module with XJTLU characteristics, and is an important part of XJTLU‘s Five-star Education Blueprint. It covers a series of practical topics based on cutting-edge researches, such as time management, study management, intimate relationship, interpersonal communication, physical health, emotion management, life education, career planning, critical thinking, etc. Through the teaching of these contents and the use of diversified pedagogy and platforms, this module aims to acquaint college students (especially freshmen) with the knowledge of mental health, cultivate their mental health awareness and self-management ability, and help them with their psychological and social adjustment during university years, so as to provide a solid guarantee for them to grow up to be healthy and independent individuals as well as noble and responsible social citizens.

Comparison between Chinese and Western Culture

This module takes the historical development as its axis, selecting representative cultural cases from different historical stages of both Chinese and Western cultures for comparison. It covers various aspects including politics, economy, urbanisation, literature, and education. The aim of the module is to foster an understanding and mastery of the historical trajectories of Chinese and Western cultures, to cultivate comprehension and empathy towards diverse cultures, and to equip students with skills for cross-cultural communication. Through cultural learning, students will develop cultural confidence and acquire the capability to promote and disseminate exemplary Chinese culture.

Media Literacy Education

This module is an online ideological education course for students’ media literacy, values and possible problems in self-growth in the New Media World. The course utilises the new media nurturing mechanism, and through discussions on current societal issues and sharing diversified cultures on campus, it subconsciously leads students to improve their media literacy, build correct ideological value systems, and realize better self-growth in the complicated network world. At the same time, the course is also committed to exploring the construction of a new campus network nurturing ecology of “new media + education”, and actively establishing a nurturing platform for XJTLU’s ideological education with humanistic temperature, emotional thickness and depth of thought, so that the ideological education can be extended from offline to online, from inside the classroom to outside the classroom, from books to all aspects of life, realizing the full participation of all students in all aspects of life. It is also a place to realize the requirements of the whole staff, the whole process, and all-round education in the field of ideology and politics in colleges and universities.

Optional Modules

Optional modules are non-credit modules offered by the CCTC in accordance with the interests and needs of students. They are offered during evenings, weekends and summer vacations, in cooperation with other departments, centers of learning and teaching, other administrative departments, and student clubs, and by further integrating resources from outside the university. The courses are designed to cultivate students’ knowledge, abilities and qualities beyond the mandatory courses, to complement the major courses and credit courses, and to help students achieve better self-growth. The courses cover humanities, history, politics, philosophy, science, innovation and entrepreneurship, sports, art and other aspects, with rich contents and diverse forms. We have a strong teaching team, which consists of senior lecturers from outside the university, staff from various departments of XJTLU and current XJTLU students. The courses provide students with “useful, interesting and effective” content through the transfer of skills and sharing of experience by outstanding lecturers.
