Spanish Intensive Course - Beginners level – Summer 2025

Course level

Initiation course (absolute beginner), benchmark equivalent to a CEFR A1-.

Overview

This course is targeted at anyone interested in learning Spanish language. The program of this course is adapted but not limited to Chinese learners of Spanish, starting from the very basics like greetings and introductions.

Participants

Any Spanish learner who wants to learn Spanish from zero.

None.

Hours/Dates

  • 60 hours.
  • Two weeks, from June 23 to July 4 (Monday to Friday), from 9:00 to 16:00 with one hour lunch break.

Course Delivery

This course is delivered onsite. Students can attend the sessions in person at the designated classroom on our XJTLU-SIP campus.

Student Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will:

  1. Demonstrate comprehension of basic spoken Spanish about familiar topics.
  2. Understand familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases designed to satisfy needs of a concrete type, from a range of different type of texts.
  3. Demonstrate spoken communication skills by providing and/or exchanging personal information at very basic level.
  4. Produce very simple texts in Spanish about familiar topics
  5. Identify very basic aspects of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

Method of teaching

Core teaching will be conducted through seminars focused on the Spanish language and study skills, emphasizing interaction among students and encouraging participation from all. Additionally, there will be guided practice designed to help students prepare for classes, reinforce what they have learned, and develop strategies for independent learning. Online resources will also support these activities, providing supplementary practice and facilitating online forums for Q&A between students and tutors. This approach ensures a rich variety of methods and resources, promoting a communicative and interactive learning environment.

  2. Talking about climate and weather.
  3. Spanish speaking countries and their cultures.
  4. Geography in Spanish speaking countries.
  5. Accentuation.


  1. Buying and selling products, clothes and accessories.
  2. Telling prices.
  3. Describing clothes and what people are wearing.
  4. Talking about preferences.
  5. Talking about obligations.


  1. Expressing and comparing likes, dislikes and interests.
  2. Music in the Spanish-Speaking countries


  1. Review units 0-1-2-3-4-5

Attendance and certification

Students passing the course will obtain a certificate of completion. Teaching takes places through seminars. A minimum of 80% attendance (at least 48 h of attendance) is required to pass this course and obtain the certificate.

Students will be assessed as follows:

  1. Online quizzes (60%): two invigilated tests (30% + 30%) delivered on the Learning Mall platform.
  2. Speaking task (40%): an oral interview with an examiner.

Teaching team

Ms. Elena Jiménez Lago (coordinator)

Born in Madrid (Spain), she has taught Spanish in China since 2017, first at Soochow University and now in Xi’an-Jiaotong-Liverpool University, where she is Deputy Head of the Spanish Language Division. Her experience includes teaching language, culture, and pronunciation courses to Chinese learners of Spanish.

 

Mr. F. Javier González Manzano

Mr. F. Javier González Manzano has been a teacher of Spanish as a Foreign Language in different institutions such as universities, colleges, and language schools in Spain, Japan, and China. He is currently a Spanish Lecturer at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University since February 2022.

He has extensive experience teaching general Spanish and Spanish speaking and pronunciation courses, as well as grading Spanish proficiency tests. Moreover, he has a proven track record of preparing students for public speaking, and during his time in Japan, he successfully coached many students to victory in the “oratory in Spanish” national competition.

  • Fees will not be reimbursed, except in extreme cases where participants are unable to attend the course due to serious accidents or illness.
