This biennial event is the main gathering of sociolinguists internationally in China, providing a unique opportunity and forum to develop and exchange ideas and research findings about language and society in its manifold connections and manifestations.

The International Conference on Chinese Sociolinguistics has grown, from its beginnings as a small meeting of China-based academics at the University of Macau in 2002, into the largest sociolinguistics conference in China. Till now, it has been hosted 13 times by the University of Macau, Nanjing University, Beijing University, University of Melbourne, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Jilin University, Xiamen University, Sichuan International Studies University, etc. It usually draws some 300 participants from home and abroad and comprises a premier, international forum for developing and exchanging new ideas, broadening the scope of the discipline, and creating new academic networks.

Themed Sociolinguistics in a Multilingual World, the 14th International Conference on Chinese Sociolinguistics will place emphasis on the importance of understanding diversity and disparity as a challenge and as an opportunity, to explore new aspects and directions of sociolinguistics in this increasingly multilingual world.

A special issue on the theme of Sociolinguistics in a Multilingual World is planned to be published in an internationally peer-reviewed journal.
