During the University’s first decade, the structural shortcomings of traditional higher education became increasingly apparent. Its emphasis on knowledge transmission, degrees and qualifications, combined with insufficient attention to students’ holistic development, led to a strong exam-oriented culture and intensifying internal competition. Students were often placed in a passive learning position, resulting in a lack of independent thinking, critical thinking and self-directed learning capabilities. They also had limited opportunities to develop a sense of responsibility and social commitment, had restricted space to explore their interests and plan their lives, and faced a deep-seated tension between rigid discipline-specific training and their diverse developmental needs. As a result, it was difficult to equip students with the capabilities required to respond to an increasingly uncertain, complex and rapidly changing world.
From its founding, XJTLU made clear that it would not simply replicate existing models. Instead, it positioned itself as a university that integrates global resources, Eastern and Western cultures, and best practices, and one that explores education through syntegrative innovation in order to provide an XJTLU solution for the future of education. Therefore, establishing an international university rooted in China and adapted to the needs of future society became the strategic anchor of XJTLU.
(2) Definition of the model
The XJTLU 1.0 Professional Elite Education model represents a transformation and upgrading of the traditional higher education model. It practises an educational approach that aims to support students’ healthy growth and is centred on students and their learning. It advocates personalised, interest-driven and research-led learning, while strengthening students’ understanding of industry contexts.
The purpose of this model is to enable students to develop a sufficient understanding of their chosen fields of study and the future development trends of their industries, so that they can truly become accomplished, internationalised, high-quality and high-level professionals.
This model integrates the flexibility of American education, the quality assurance system of British education, and the strengths of Chinese education in building a solid foundation of knowledge. It organises teaching around academic disciplines and professional fields, emphasising active learning and knowledge integration. It promotes the transformation of the classroom from a teacher’s “lecture hall” into a student’s “learning space”, shifts assessment from a sole focus on marks to the cultivation of capabilities and students’ holistic growth, and moves the educational objective from knowledge memorisation to the development of higher-order thinking, the formation of mature mindsets, and the nurturing of wisdom.
In XJTLU’s early years, schools such as the International Business School Suzhou served as the core platforms for implementing the XJTLU 1.0 model. With academic disciplines and professional fields at the centre, the University established a comprehensive teaching system. It develops its distinctive education system by synthesising the respective strengths of British, American and Chinese educational systems.
Research-led teaching was embedded throughout the entire education process. The University also created the Extended Study Scheme (ESS), which, built on a strengthened foundation of education for personal qualities and competencies, encouraged students to explore their interests, plan their lives, and, where appropriate, reselect their academic programmes in line with their personal development goals. This supported interest-driven learning and gave students the opportunity to pursue their aspirations.
To this end, XJTLU developed its distinctive Five-Star Education System, placing equal emphasis on attributes, capabilities and knowledge. This system helps students achieve three key transformations during their university journey: from children to young adults and then to global citizens; from passive learning to active learning and then to research-led learning; and from aimless study to interest-driven learning and then to life planning. In this way, students are encouraged to move from “passive reception” to “active exploration”.
Through comprehensive training provided by the four‑fold mentorship system (academic advisors, buddies, external mentors, development advisors), inquiry-based classrooms, interdisciplinary projects, independent research and social practice, students rapidly develop into international professionals who have aspirations, a sense of responsibility, clear direction, strong capabilities and the courage to explore new possibilities, while possessing both professional expertise and an understanding of their industries.

2. XJTLU 2.0 Model: Deepening Industry-Education Integration and Exploring the Cultivation of Industry Elites

As the XJTLU 1.0 model continued to evolve, the University keenly identified the trends in the transformation of industries in the digital and intelligent era. Traditional professional education was increasingly constrained by overly narrow disciplinary boundaries, a disconnect between knowledge and industry, and graduates’ insufficient practical readiness and capacity for innovation. Future society urgently requires interdisciplinary talent who can operate on technology platforms, collaborate with experts, and coexist with AI. Yet, globally, a mature system for cultivating such capabilities has not yet taken shape.
In response to this gap, XJTLU built an education model anchored to real industry needs. This model does not merely involve superficial university-enterprise cooperation or the provision of additional internship opportunities for students. Rather, it breaks decisively away from the inward-looking and entrenched perspective of traditional education. It begins by analysing future societal trends and leading industries, then works with top enterprises in those industries to explore future development models, technological trajectories and talent needs. On this basis, it works backwards to determine the direction and pathways of talent cultivation, while collaborating in education, research, and the advancement of industry. In doing so, XJTLU has initiated its distinctive model of industry elite education.
(2) Definition of the model
The XJTLU 2.0 Industry Elite Education model moves away from discipline-oriented cultivation and instead uses industry as the framework for integrating professional knowledge, entrepreneurship education and leadership training. Through deep collaboration with industry and alignment with industry needs, it creates a strong connection between classroom teaching and practice.
The model aims to jointly cultivate high-calibre industry backbone talent, application-oriented professionals, entrepreneurs, and future industry leaders who are able to use diverse technological tools, artificial intelligence and robotics to lead the development of new ways of living and emerging industries. While we acknowledge that industry leaders are rarely solely cultivated through education, this model can help many elite professionals emerge naturally as leaders in a conducive environment.
XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) represents a core practice of the Industry Elite Education model with its integration of industry and education. The College strictly follows two core principles in its development: focus on future-oriented, leading emerging industries, and partner with leading enterprises in their respective sectors.
Moving beyond the traditional framework of single-discipline education, the College has established seven industry schools in strategic frontier fields, including chips, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and advanced computing, robotics, intelligent manufacturing, cultural technology, and intelligent finance and business. It has also developed regular, in-depth and end-to-end collaborative education mechanisms with more than 300 leading enterprises in China and elsewhere.
XJTLU 2.0 has created a virtuous cycle of educational empowerment, industry feedback, and mutual growth. It fully embeds real technological challenges from enterprises, ongoing research and development projects, and industry development scenarios into the day-to-day teaching system. This promotes deep integration between classroom teaching, research training, innovation and entrepreneurship, and industrial practice. By engaging directly with real industry problems and participating in authentic project-based challenges, students are able to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge, strengthen their engineering practice capabilities, and develop a comprehensive industry perspective as well as leadership qualities.
At the same time, the model draws on the University’s research strengths and the innovative capacity of its staff and students to empower partner enterprises in return. Through collaborative research, technological iteration, the development of innovative solutions, and targeted talent pipelines, XJTLU supports enterprises in overcoming technological bottlenecks, optimising industrial models, and building high-quality reserves of future talent. In doing so, it effectively promotes enterprise transformation, upgrading, and innovation-driven development, truly realising collaborative development in which education empowers industry and industry enriches education.

3. XJTLU 3.0 Model: Building an Industrial Innovation Ecosystem for Collaborative and Symbiotic Development
(1) Context and strategic rationale
With the deepening development of digitalisation, networking, and intelligent technologies, the boundaries of traditional organisations are being continuously reshaped. The integration of resources across disciplines, sectors, time and space has become increasingly possible, and human society is gradually entering an era of ecosystem-based development.
One-dimensional university-enterprise cooperation is no longer sufficient to support the deeper needs of talent development and industry upgrading. In-depth cultivation within specialised fields requires industry context and real-world problems; the growth of future industry leaders depends on the nurturing of a complete industrial ecosystem. Both XJTLU 1.0 Professional Elite Education and XJTLU 2.0 Industry Elite Education require broader authentic scenarios, richer industrial resources and a more sustainable environment for growth.
Based on the understanding that the future will be an ecosystem era defined by boundary-crossing collaboration and symbiotic development, XJTLU has further extended the boundaries of education to the creation of industrial innovation ecosystems.
(2) Definition of the model
The XJTLU 3.0 Industrial Innovation Ecosystem model fully breaks down the walls of the university, more profoundly moving past bilateral university‑industry integration toward multi‑party ecological development. Leveraging its relatively neutral position, forward-looking mindset, rich talent resources, international networks and strong foundation in basic research, XJTLU brings together government, industry and other relevant social resources to build industrial innovation ecosystems rooted in specialised vertical fields.
This model promotes the upgrading and development of education, research and industry, enabling collaborative and symbiotic growth while generating shared ecosystem value.
For students, this model provides access to abundant resources, extensive opportunities and an enabling environment. Through immersive learning, research and practice, it not only helps young people engage closely with society and grow rapidly, but also supports them in innovation and entrepreneurship, future planning and the realisation of their aspirations.
To build a vertically integrated industrial innovation ecosystem around the industrial chain, a group of ecosystem-oriented academies – including XJTLU-JITRI Academy, the Academy of Future Education, the Academy of Film and Creative Technology, the XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang), as well as the restructured Academy of Life and Natural Sciences and Academy of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing, which will officially commence operation in September 2026 – serve as the core implementation platforms for XJTLU’s 3.0 industrial innovation ecosystem model. They are also key platforms through which XJTLU breaks traditional boundaries in university development, integrates diverse resources from government, industry and society, and cultivates industrial innovation ecosystems.
Different from the 1.0 model, which focuses on in-depth discipline-focused development, and the 2.0 model, which centres on the integration of industry and education, these ecosystem-oriented academies are grounded in the long-term development of industry. With resource collaboration, real‑world‑scenario‑driven capacity building, and collaborative symbiosis at their core, they provide authentic industrial scenarios, high-quality industry resources and a sustainable innovation environment for the development of disciplinary and industry elites. In doing so, they effectively address the limitations of traditional education models, which are often disconnected from industrial realities and lack ecosystem-level support.
For example, the Academy of Future Education has taken the lead in moving beyond the traditional boundaries of a school of education. It has stepped beyond the campus, integrated itself into industry, and extended its reach nationwide. It has established a full-chain, integrated education system spanning basic education, vocational education and higher education, while also supporting educational theory research, high-level talent development and forward-looking innovation experiments. Working together with its partners, the Academy promotes the application of cutting-edge educational technologies, empowers education reform in China and international exchange, and guides and supports the development of personalised and lifelong learning systems. It also provides resources and real-world scenarios for staff and students to engage in innovation and entrepreneurship, fully demonstrating the core strengths of the 3.0 model: ecosystem-based education, collaborative empowerment and symbiotic development.
It is worth noting that the industry schools under XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) are representative practices of the 2.0 model. When the 2.0 model further deepens and integrates industry resources, thereby promoting the formation of an industry innovation ecosystem, it enters a form in which the 2.0 and 3.0 models interact and integrate organically. When XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) moves beyond the boundaries and concept of a traditional campus, becoming deeply embedded in the urban and social ecosystem – for example, through sci-tech innovation districts, education-technology-culture-art parks, a wide range of social innovation activities, and hands-on practices to real-world challenges – it nurtures a lifestyle and cultural atmosphere centred on creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. In particular, as it explores future approaches to social governance, this model naturally evolves into XJTLU 4.0 model.

4. XJTLU 4.0 Model: Creating a Future-oriented Social Ecosystem for Lifelong Learning and Innovation, and Exploring the New Mission of the University of the Future
(1) Context and strategic rationale
Twenty years on from XJTLU’s founding, the world is witnessing the spread of deglobalisation trends, an increasingly complex and volatile global governance landscape, and the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence. At the same time, gaps in wealth and intellectual capital continue to widen, while cross-boundary and systemic social challenges, difficulties, and governance issues are becoming ever more prominent. Global fragmentation, the reshaping of international order and digital connectivity now coexist. While AI is transforming modes of production and ways of life, it is also intensifying development disparities. These shifts pose new questions for universities that go beyond the creation of industrial innovation ecosystems, and these strategic social issues place new expectations on the university of the future.
In the face of such complex challenges, the future of social governance lies in ecosystem-based, symbiotic and collaborative approaches. The key question for universities is therefore how they can further transcend traditional boundaries: building on the creation of industrial innovation ecosystems, how can they expand their role to participate in the development of social innovation ecosystems and the exploration of new governance solutions?
(2) Definition of the model
The XJTLU 4.0 model centres on the development of a future-oriented social ecosystem for lifelong learning and innovation. It fully breaks down the traditional boundaries between the university and society, elevating the 3.0 industrial innovation ecosystem to the level of society as a whole, and promoting the deep integration of education, talent, research and future social development.
By establishing future‑societal innovation hubs in multiple locations around the world, the model transcends the boundaries between campus, industry, education and society, enabling the University to engage comprehensively with the wider community. It connects the full chain of basic education, higher education and lifelong learning, extending education across the entire life course, across all scenarios and across society as a whole.
In doing so, XJTLU aims to cultivate global citizens and future leaders who are capable of leading social transformation and responding to complex global governance challenges. At the same time, through the construction and experimentation of social ecosystems, the University seeks to contribute XJTLU’s solutions to future social development and social governance.
In line with the objectives of the 4.0 model, XJTLU is developing a network of future-oriented experimental bases around the world, focused on promoting social ecosystem development through education.
For example, with the University’s new North Campus as a core platform, XJTLU is creating a future-oriented lifelong learning and innovative social ecosystem laboratory. In partnership with Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, it is establishing the XJTLU Syntegrative Education Centre (Thailand), which will develop an integrated future education system driven by learners’ interests, personalised development and full-cycle innovation empowerment. Together, the two parties will also co-create the XJTLU-CP Future Innovation Ecosystem for the Digital and Intelligence Era.
In Hainan, XJTLU is developing an international education support platform and a pilot project for smart education services. In Wuhan Optics Valley, the University is deepening its practice in future learning and the construction of an innovation-oriented social ecosystem. In the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, XJTLU is actively exploring new pathways for the coordinated development of education and industry through in-depth university-enterprise collaboration.

5. Syntegration + Ecosystem: The Internal Logic and Synergistic Relationship of the Four Models
XJTLU’s four models are not simply generational concepts. Rather, they form an organic whole that expands layer by layer while empowering one another in parallel. Together, they constitute XJTLU’s comprehensive education system, characterised by the synergy of professional schools, industry schools, ecosystem-oriented academies around the industrial chain, and future society experimental ecosystems. This has shaped XJTLU’s development pattern of being rooted in Suzhou, extending across China, and connecting with the world.
From the perspective of their evolution, the four models follow a strategic pathway of “rooting inward – extending outward – building ecosystems – elevating to society”. The 1.0 model is the starting point of innovation for the entire system. It completes the inward transformation of traditional education and returns to the essence of education: developing people.
The 2.0 model extends the boundaries of education from the campus to industry, responding to the demand for industry-ready talent through the integration of industry and education.
The 3.0 model builds industrial innovation ecosystems. It provides strong support for both 1.0 education for disciplinary elites and 2.0 education for industry elites, through industrial scenarios, research resources and practice platforms. It empowers disciplinary elites in their learning and research implementation, supports industry elites in deepening their engagement with industry, and strengthens the foundations for industrial innovation and entrepreneurship.
The 4.0 model further expands the boundaries of the ecosystem from industry to society as a whole. It not only enables the refined and in-depth development of 3.0 industrial ecosystems, but also provides comprehensive support for the diversified growth of 1.0 professional elites and 2.0 industry elites. In doing so, it realises symbiotic development across education, industry, society and civilisation. It also explores a new paradigm for educating people for a symbiotic civilisation in the age of artificial intelligence, responds to the defining issues of our time including global governance and lifelong learning, and endows the university with a more far-reaching social mission.
The fundamental concept running through all four models is that humanity has entered an ecosystem era. Digital and intelligent technologies serve as the infrastructure of future social life; collaborative symbiosis is the basic logic of future human development; ecosystem dividends are the goal of future education, industry and social governance; and altruism and symbiotic civilisation constitute the underlying mechanisms of the society of the future.
Digitalisation facilitates the cross-boundary flow and integration of resources, while intelligent technologies are transforming how humans learn and apply knowledge. Integration has thus become the basic mode of human existence in this era, and Syntegrative Education has accordingly become the foundational philosophy running through all four of XJTLU’s models. The rapid iteration of digital-intelligence technologies has not only greatly expanded the space for integration, but has also enabled XJTLU’s Syntegrative Education to evolve from a concept into a fully-fledged system of practice with a clear structure and a complete range of dimensions.
First, the integration of real-world context into elite professional education.
