Professor Wenhua Shan

Professor Wenhua Shan, Doctor of Law from Cambridge University (Trinity College) in the UK and Xiamen University in China, is a national expert, a chair professor of the Ministry of Education, and a special allowance expert of The State Council of China.

He is currently the Assistant President and the Dean of the Law School of Xi’an Jiaotong University, the Head of the Belt and Road National Research and Cultivation Base for Foreign-related Rule of Law and the Head of International Rule of Law Institute.

He is also a mediator at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes of the World Bank, appointed by the Chinese government, and honorary editor of The Chinese Journal of Comparative Law of Oxford University Press. He is, among other things, an expert member of the International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court, Vice President of China Society of International Economic Law, Executive Director of China Society of International Law, Executive Chairman of China Permanent Forum on International Investment Arbitration, Vice President of Shaanxi Province Law Society.

He has served as Vice President (temporary) of the Judicial Case Research Institute of the Supreme People’s Court, senior research fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge in the UK, professor of the University of New South Wales in Australia, and the first director of the Selection (disciplinary) Committee of Judges and Prosecutors in Shaanxi province.

Professor Shan has long been engaged in research in the field of international economic law and comparative law, mainly focusing on Sino-foreign investment treaties, comparative foreign investment law, and the legal framework of investment in China and the EU. He has presided over dozens of major national and international key projects such as the European Union, the World Economic Forum, the Academy of International Comparative Law, China’s Ministry of Education’s Philosophy and Social Science Research, the National Social Science Fund project, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce and the Supreme People’s Court.

He has published more than 20 books in both English and Chinese in well-known publishing houses at home and abroad, such as Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, People’s Publishing House and Law Press, and edited English monograph series such as Silk Road Studies in International Economic Law. He has published dozens of academic papers in authoritative Chinese and English legal journals such as European Journal of International Law, The American Journal of Comparative Law, Chinese Social Sciences, Chinese Law, and Legal Research.

He has published a series of commentaries on the current hot and frontier issues of international law research in important newspapers such as Guangming Daily, Economic Daily, and Rule of Law Daily. His publications have been cited by foreign supreme courts, international tribunals and authoritative journal articles.

He has won the first prize for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements (Humanities and Social Sciences) in higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education, the Special Prize for Outstanding Achievements in National Think Tank Construction by CTTI Source Think Tank, the Qian Duansheng Law Research Achievement Award, and the first prize for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences of Shaanxi Province. He was also named in the top 10 of the first Springer Nature China New Development Awards and the Pioneer Award for Innovative Talents of Chinese Think Tanks, and has received other important international and domestic awards.
