In this talk, Elena Manferdini will provide an overview of her recently published edited volume titled 'Full Spectrum: Colour in Contemporary Architecture'. Following her talk, Javier Gonzalez will showcase a selection of projects from his Shanghai-born and based company, 100architects. The lecture will culminate in a conversation cantered on the impactful use of colour in architectural design.
Elena Manferdini
Elena Manferdini, born in 1974, is an Italian architect with over twenty years of professional experience in design and education. She received a Professional Engineering Degree from the University of Civil Engineering (Bologna, Italy) and a Master of Architecture and Urban Design from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).
Her practice is based in Venice, CA. With a body of work that spans public art, architecture, and industrial design, her eponymous Atelier has created work that uplifts the human spirit. Her design is known for its vibrant colors, meaningful narratives, and her attention to community.
Elena Manferdini loves art, creativity, inventions and deeply believes in the positive power of education and ideas; after all, few forces are as potent as an idea whose time has arrived. She aspires to devote her life to serving the broader community of students, educators, and creatives around the world.
Elena Manferdini currently teaches at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and is the Graduate Programs Chair. She has held the Howard Friedman Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of California Berkeley (UCB), and visiting Professor positions at Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania, and Seika University. She has held lectures and workshops in various universities around the world. In 2013 she was selected as recipient for the Educator of the Year presidential award given by the AIA Los Angeles.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in both architecture and art museums. In 2016 Elena Manferdini was awarded the PAN Award for best public art project in North America. In 2013 she received a Graham Award for architecture, the 2013 ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence. In 2011 she was one of the recipients of the prestigious annual grants from the United States Artists (USA) in the category of architecture and design.
In 2019 Manferdini was honored with the ICON Award, which is a prize that recognizes iconic women who have made an indelible mark on Los Angeles, culture, and society in general through their work, character, and creative leadership.
Javier Gonzalez
Javier, native of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is a Spanish Architect who has resided in Shanghai over the last 11 years, since 2013.
He started his education at the School of Architecture from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, culminating it with a Master’s Degree in Advanced Architecture from IAAC (Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia), in Barcelona, where he specialized in Computational Design and Digital Fabrication.
After gaining international working experience in Copenhagen (Denmark), added to his previous experience in Spain, Javier came to China in 2013, as a Lead Project Manager for RTA-Office, a Spanish company with offices in Barcelona & Shanghai.
His company, 100architects, is a Shanghai-born & based company born with the mission of improving our cities and the experience of citizens in the public realm, by providing stimulating public spaces.
Their team in Shanghai is composed by a mix of International & Chinese young talented architects, landscape architects & designers, whose work lies at the intersection of architecture, street art, landscape architecture, and urban interventions; and currently, from their headquarter in Shanghai, they are developing projects in 5 different continents and 12 countries.
100architects has recently opened a new satellite office in Dubai, from where they offer on-ground and in-person service to their increasing clients from the Middle East.
