On Saturday, March 9, 2024, XJTLU International Innovation Hub will host the Innovation Factory Open Day. At this event, participants will have the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of the Digital Invisible Ruler and learn about its potential.
The Digital Invisible Ruler is a small smart device that has no scale, triangular ruler or straightedge shape, but has a convenient measuring function. It utilizes an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance between a plane and a target for non-contact measurement. The ultrasonic transmitter emits ultrasonic waves in a certain direction and starts timing. When the ultrasonic waves propagate in the air and meet with obstacles, they are immediately reflected back, and the ultrasonic receiver stops timing when it receives the reflected waves, and displays the measured distance through a digital tube, realizing the working principle of the invisible ruler.
In this Innovation Factory Open Day, participants will learn how the Digital Invisible Ruler works, take part in hardware assembly, and also learn how to write a program to adapt to the Arduino Uno motherboard. The activity covers open-source hardware programming, hand assembly and programming debugging: the shell of the invisible ruler is made by laser cutting, and the ultrasonic signals are processed and information is displayed with the help of microcontrollers (e.g. Arduino Uno motherboard). Participants were able to fully understand the realization path of e-Science and Technology and experience the charm of science and technology in depth.
