Dean's Message
As Dean of the School of Film and TV Arts(SoFTA), I welcome you to our first E-Newsletter. SoFTA will publish digital newsletters quarterly to provide a platform for information exchange and cultivate the film, TV and Arts community. The newsletters will cover quarterly highlights, main school activities, student and staff achievements, and business engagement activities for university staff, students, industry partners and society.
SoFTA is a research and practice-led school that prepares graduates for careers as media professionals. Located in Suzhou Industry Park, Jiangsu, China, XJTLU School of Film and TV Art is an exciting place to learn and grow. We welcome you to join our community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni and together shape the future of Film and TV Arts.

International Creatives Converge on Suzhou for the 3rd MEGA Festival
The Academy of Film and Creative Technology at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is proud to present the third MEGA International Creative Media Festival, a weeklong celebration of creativity and innovation in media. The festival will take place from 12 to 18 May at the Suzhou Culture and Art Centre and XJTLU’s SIP campus.

Alumnus Haofeng Li: Delving deep into interests
Haofeng Li graduated from the School of Film and TV Arts with a BA in Digital Media Arts in 2000. Now, he is an accomplished television commercial (TVC) director. According to Li, his time at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University provided an international environment that nurtured his interests and inspired him to pursue excellence.
Fang Liu participated in the XJTLU team project and won first prize in Zijin Award for College Student Design Exhibition
The “Morphema” exhibit, curated by XJTLU, was designed to show the “minimum form of existence” and was on display at the fourth Zijin Award College Student Design Exhibition (CSDE) in Nanjing. The design was awarded First Prize in the Best Exhibition Award out of 136 entries.
Qian Zhuang: Insights on post-production producing for independent documentaries
Recently, Qian Zhuang served as a post-production producer and participated in the production of the independent documentary "The Last Year of Darkness", which is shortlisted for the "NEXT: WAVE AWARD" competition unit at the Copenhagen International Documentary Festival (CPH:DOX), the largest documentary film festival in Northern Europe, and received a special mention award.
Wai Kit Leong’s research paper was published in the Special Issue: SEARCH Conference 2022 Preliminary (A Scopus index journal) on 17th April 2023
Wai KitLeong’s research paper Perception of university students toward the use of Artificial Intelligent-generated voice in explainer videos explores the potential of AI-generated voices in explainer videos aimed at university students, with the hope of investigating students’ responses to AI-generated voices by looking at whether they respond positively to the voice and whether there is any Uncanny Valley effect of revulsion towards it.
Dr Takao Terui was invited to give a seminar on his latest research about cultural policy and post-modern architecture in Britain.
As a research fellow receiving a fellowship from Window Research Institute, Dr Takao Terui was invited to give a seminar on his latest research about cultural policy and post-modern architecture in Britain. The seminar was held at Atelier Hagiwara, Japan's National Tangible Cultural Property on 15 April 2023.

Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai was invited to attend the 6th Media Practical Teaching Innovation Conference and delivered a speech
Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai was invited to attend the 6th Media Practical Teaching Innovation Conference and the Third First Council Meeting of the Experimental Teaching Professional Committee of the Chinese Collegial Association for Visual Art from 19 to 22 May, and delivered a speech entitled "Digital Revolution, Challenges of Education in the Metaverse Era".

On 13 May, Lubao Cao, Secretary of the Suzhou Municipal Party Committee, visited the XJTLU School of Film and TV Arts.
Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai participated in the Sixth General Meeting and the Second First Council Meeting of the Suzhou Motion Picture Association on 24 May.
Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai was invited to participate in the opening ceremony of the FreshPitch Factual Content Conference 2023 on 23 May.
On 22 May, Professor Quanguo He, Dean of the School of International Education, Hunan University of Technology accompanied by Dr Yiqing Yang, visited the School and discussed Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools and postgraduate education.
On 12 May, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai was invited to attend the second Council meeting of the 7th Suzhou Film and Television Artists Association and gave a speech entitled "New Way Out for Film and Television Media under the Digital Revolution".
On 11 April, the Director of the Shanghai Film Technology Plant visited the School of Film and TV Arts to explore collaboration and to promote the development of the film and TV industry.
