Recently, a paper from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s master’s student, Wenbo Zhao, has earned the Excellent Oral Presentation Award at the First Wisdom Lake Postgraduate Researcher Development Conference & 2023 XJTLU Postgraduate Research Symposium.

Zhao is a master’s student majoring in Construction Management at XJTLU’s Department of Civil Engineering who’s supervised by Dr Jian Li Hao and Dr Wenting Ma.

As the only master's student to receive the Excellent Oral Presentation Award, Zhao’s research focuses on developing a system dynamics model for analysing policies on decarbonising prefabricated building waste in China. The study is particularly significant in the context of China’s rapid economic progress and urbanisation, which have led to a surge in construction waste and associated environmental challenges.

The system dynamics model is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of various policy combinations in decarbonising prefabricated building waste in China, according to Zhao.

“By simulating the overall construction waste and associated carbon emissions in China from 2010 to 2030 under different policy scenarios, our research offers crucial insights into the potential impact of different policies within China’s construction sector.

“The research signifies a step towards a more sustainable future for China’s construction industry. By addressing the critical issues of construction waste and the associated carbon emissions, our work has the potential to guide policymakers and industry stakeholders towards implementing effective strategies for a greener and more sustainable built environment.”
