The Suzhou Universities Film and Television Alliance Launch Ceremony was successfully held at the Suzhou Cultural Arts Center
On 17 December 2023, the Launch Ceremony of the Suzhou Universities Film and Television Alliance was held at the Suzhou Cultural Arts Center. The alliance, led by Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, is a joint effort of eight universities in Suzhou aiming to collectively enhance the education of the film, television and digital cultural creative industry, train more outstanding film and creative professionals, and stimulate the prosperous development of the film and television industry in Suzhou. The members of the alliance are Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Soochow University, Suzhou City College, Suzhou University of Science and Technology, Suzhou Vocational University, Suzhou Art & Crafts Vocational College, Suzhou Industrial Park Outsourcing Vocational College, and Suzhou Business and Technology College.
The 4th Digital Media Art Exhibition of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) opened successfully, with a cooperation agreement signed with the Suzhou Industrial Park Public Culture Center
The "4th Digital Media Art Exhibition and New Year event" hosted by XJTLU was held at the AS Building on the evening of 13 December 2023. The exhibition, themed "Diversity", ingeniously integrates five different specialized courses, aiming to present a more intuitive and comprehensive beauty of digital media art to the audience. The exhibition covers IP character design, installation and interactive design, post-production, portfolio design, and graduation projects, creating a comprehensive digital media feast and providing the audience with a deeply immersive audio-visual experience. At the opening ceremony, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai and Yuyang Zhen, director of the Party and Government Office of the Suzhou Industrial Park Public Culture Center, jointly signed a cooperation framework agreement between XJTLU and the Suzhou Industrial Park Public Culture Center. The agreement will carry out in-depth cooperation in various fields such as practical teaching, internships, project research, training, and event organization, aiming to jointly promote talent cultivation and cross-border innovation.

On 7 December 2023, the Suzhou Universities Film and Television Alliance, spearheaded by Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, had its successful preparatory meeting. Aimed at fostering deep cooperation among Suzhou's universities in film and television majors, the alliance intends to bolster the local film and television industry. Representatives from universities such as Soochow University, Suzhou University of Science and Technology, the Art College of Suzhou Vocational University, the Industrial Park Outsourcing Vocational College, and Suzhou Business and Technology College, as well as leaders from the Suzhou Cultural Arts Center, attended the meeting.
SoFTA Dean Professor Mai and teachers discussed collaborations with the Wuxi National Film Digital Industry Park
On 30 November 2023, The School Dean Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai and teachers, including Programme Director of Cultural and Creative Industries Dr Yiqing Yang, Yibin Yu and Biwei Cong from Filmmaking Programme, Kaisi Wang from TV Production, visited Wuxi National Digital Film Industry Park, Jiangsu Hualaiwu Cultural Group Co., Ltd., and had in-depth discussions with Jiangsu Hualaiwu Cultural Group Co., Ltd. on relevant cooperation areas, including internships, training, competitions, and metaverse, etc.

College of Liberal Arts at Wenzhou-KEAN University visited SoFTA
Delegates from the School of Communication from the College of Liberal Arts at Wenzhou-KEAN University, a Sino-Foreign university, visited SoFTA on 10 November 2023. Delegates included Dr Denise Horn, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dr Hooisan Noew, Dr Agata Wrochna, and Evangeline Xiang. The Dean of SoFTA, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, Programme Director of Cultural and Creative Industries, Dr Yiqing Yang, Qian Zhuang and Biwei Cong from the Filmmaking Programme attended the meeting. The meeting focused on knowledge exchange, department and curriculum development lab construction and a Filmmaking Summer School provided by SoFTA for Wenzhou-Kean students. Staff and students from Wenzhou-KEAN were welcomed to submit to the upcoming MEGA International Creative Media Festival.
Hubei Radio and Television Station Collaborates with SoFTA
On 10 November 2023, Wei Li, the Director of Waves News and Traffic Broadcasting Channel at Hubei Radio and Television Station (Hubei Media Group), along with Qing Jiang, the host, visited SoFTA to learn about the school's teaching environment and facilities. During the visit, the School Dean, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, provided an overview of talent cultivation, practical teaching, and research. Wei Li expressed high appreciation for our cultivation of media talents with deep academic knowledge and artistic taste. The two parties engaged in extensive discussions on school-enterprise cooperation and reached a cooperative agreement to establish an internship base. SoFTA academic team visited Jinji Lake Arts Museum and Caoxieshan Site Park for collaborative projects
On 2 November 2023, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, the Programme Director of Filmmaking Cheng Fang, the Programme Director of Digital Media Arts Fang Liu, and the Programme Director of Cultural and Creative Industries, Dr Yiqing Yang, visited the subordinate departments of the Suzhou Industrial Park Public Culture Center - Jinji Lake Art Museum and Caoxieshan Site Park, and discussed relevant matters for further cooperation with the Suzhou Industrial Park Public Culture Center.
Dr Stephen Andrano-Moore Presented SoFTA to XJTLU Global Partners and Ambassadors
Dr Stephen Andriano-Moore delivered presentations about SoFTA in the AS building to members of the XJTLU Global Partners Forum and Embassy and Consulate General Guests on 31 October and 2 November 2023 as part of the Immersive Campus Tour programme. Through this event, Dr Andriano-Moore promoted the four programmes and the MEGA event to 40 key global XJTLU partners and over 10 Embassy and Consulate Generals from numerous countries, including Indonesia, South Korea, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, Republic of Malawi, Kingdom of Lesotho, Republic of Zimbabwe, and the Republic of Namibia. Ambassador Allan Chintedza from the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi commented on the quality of the student's work and said he would like students from Malawi to attend SoFTA. Ambassador Allan Chintedza from the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi and Ambassador Rabale Kenneth Sentle from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Lesotho expressed appreciation for the quality of the school facilities.
Jiangsu Huani Culture and Creative Group collaborates with SoFTA
On 31 October 2023, Bin Qi, CEO of Jiangsu Huani Cultural and Creative Co., Ltd., visited the AS Building. School Dean, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai along with Dr Yiming Chen from the Cultural and Creative Industries Programme, introduced the Academy of Film and Creative Technology and discussed the cooperation with Bin Qi between industry and academia, internship, cultural production collaborations and research projects, etc.

On 26 October 2023, SoFTA Dean Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai was invited to the field research and creation activities organized by the Suzhou Film and Television Artists Association to gain a systematic understanding of the history and cultural heritage revitalization practices in Gusu District. The participants include media professionals and cultural heritage experts.
Jie Tan from Jinji Lake Museum, SIP Public Culture Center Visited SoFTA
Jie Tang from Jinji Lake Museum, Suzhou Industrial Park Public Culture Center, visited the School of Film and TV Arts Building and discussed collaborations between the two organizations with the Dean, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai. The Programme Director of Culture and Creative Industries, Dr Yiqing Yang, joined the meeting. The areas of collaboration include internships, digital media arts graduation exhibitions, cooperative research, etc.
Famous film producer Songlin Cai visited SoFTA and discussed possible collaborations
The School Dean, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, met with the famous producer Songlin Cai (known for “Ashes of Time” and other works) and his wife, Ms Lu, on 10 October 2023. They visited the School of Film and TV Arts building together. Ideas on cooperation models for feature film projects and film education were discussed and exchanged.

Dr Stephen Andriano-Moore has published an article in the Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art
The Programme Director of TV Production, Dr Stephen Andriano-Moore, has published an article titled “2010s Hollywood Science Fiction: Telling China’s Stories Well” in the Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, Volume 10 Issue 3. This is a special issue on the art of China’s cultural diplomacy and nation branding. Dr Andriano-Moore’s research project was initially presented at the 15th Annual Conference for Chinese Visual Arts, which is part of the AHRC project ‘Art Diplomacy and Nation Branding: The Visual Politics of Reinventing China’ (2020–23). The article includes findings from Dr Andriano-Moore’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. The article can be found at: https://doi.org/10.1386/jcca_00088_1.
SoFTA research student Sijia Aileen Meng received her PhD degree
Sijia Aileen Meng successfully passed her PhD Viva Voca in October 2023 for her thesis titled "Gendered Portrayals of the Nation: Men and Women in Twenty-First Century Chinese Cinema". Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, Dr Stephen Andriano-Moore and Dr Sarah Thomas supervised Dr Meng. Her thesis proposed a theoretical framework called gender-as-nation, which provides a comprehensive lens for understanding this relationship in cinema. Her work analysed the gendered portrayals from three senses of the look, which examines male and female characters based on the look they embody, including the character’s appearance, the look of the camera upon the character, and the character’s subjective look. SoFTA congratulates Dr Meng on her comprehensive study of Chinese cinema and successful completion of her PhD studies.

An academic dialogue co-conducted by Dr Yiming Chen was selected and published in the 2023 Annual Report of Chinese Journalism
"Exploring Digital Media Practice in the Discursive-Material Relationship: A Dialogue with IAMCR President Prof. Nico Carpentier" was selected as the headline article in the 2023 Annual Report on Chinese Journalism, published by People's Daily Press in December. The article was originally published in July in a CSSCI-indexed core journal called Journalism Reviewer and was later collected and reprinted by Renmin University of China's Information Center for Social Science in September.
Dr Yiming Chen delivered a research report at the NCA
Dr Yiming Chen presented a research report titled "Trapped or Emancipated? The Emerging Identity of Middle-Age Chinese Femininity and its Resistance Discourses from Female Labor in Real Life" at the 109th Annual Convention of the National Communication Association (NCA). His co-author, Liming Liu, attended the Convention held in National Harbor, MD, USA, from November 16 to 19, 2023, as a delegate to present their research. NCA is a leading global organization in the field of communication studies dedicated to advancing communication development and research. Every year, it hosts a large-scale conference where scholars from around the world are invited to submit papers and engage in exchange presentations.

Dr Yiming Chen presented a research report titled “The Subjectivity Construction of the AI Presenters through Chinese Journalistic Practices” at the 2023 annual conference of the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association, held in Wellington, New Zealand, from 21 to 24 November 2023. ANZCA, established in 1980, is the leading association for communication studies in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of this year's conference is Bridging Communication Pasts and Futures.

Dr Yiming Chen presented a research report titled “One Digital Platform, Two Discourse Systems: A Comparative Analysis of How TikTok and Douyin Legitimate Platform Surveillance in US and China Privacy Policies “at the 2023 conference of Surveillance Studies Network (SSN), held at the University of Oregon, USA from 13 to 14 November 2023. The theme of this year’s conference is “Media, Information, Surveillance”.
Dr Karolina Pawlik presented her paper at the Asia Urban Lighting Workshop in Seoul
Dr Karolina Pawlik from the MSc Cultural and Creative Industries Programme participated in The 7th Asia Urban Lighting Workshop co-hosted in Seoul by The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) and Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI) from 20 to 21 September 2023. The theme of this year's workshop was “Urban Lighting and Culture, The Strength that Brings Us Together.” Academics, policymakers and light practitioners based in different Asian countries gathered to discuss different case studies, urban practices and design policies. Karolina presented the paper "Urban Lighting as Translation: Tradition and Modernity in Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou". She also led one of the workshops focused on the LUCI Declaration under the theme of "City, Light and Energy".

Yao Ge’s Fiction Won the Best Drama Short at the 2023 San Diego International Kid’s Film Festival
Filmmaking Programme Lecturer Yao Ge’s production “The Sun in My Heart” obtained the Best Drama Short in the 2023 San Diego International Kid’s Film Festival. “The Sun in My Heart” has been selected or entered as a finalist in many film festivals in the last three years. The honors were listed below: The 2023 San Diego International Kids’ film festival - Best Drama Short, 35th International Film Festival for Children and Youth - Selected, 2023 KIDS FIRST! SoFTA Dean Professor Mai was invited to the Annual Conference organised by the Experimental Teaching Professional Committee of the Chinese Collegial Association of Visual Arts
From 17 to 19 November 2023, the School Dean, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, along with Biwei Cong from the Filmmaking Programme and Yijun Guo from the TV Production Programme, attended the Annual Conference of the Media First-Class Major, First-Class Curriculum, AIGC System Construction, and the Meeting of 2023 Experimental Teaching Professional Committee. The Conference was organized by the Council of the Experimental Teaching Professional Committee of the Chinese Collegial Association of Visual Arts, the Conference was successfully held in Huanggang, Hubei. More than 300 participants from 100 universities in the field of film and media across the country and more than ten film and television-related industry companies gathered together to conduct in-depth discussions on how to empower first-class majors and first-class course construction in the practical teaching of film and television media, facing the rapid development of technologies such as AIGC and big models.
SoFTA successfully holds "Film Industrialization - Reflection and Practice" theme series activities
On 6 December 2023, the "Film Industrialization - Thought and Practice" themed series of events hosted by XJTLU's School of Film and TV Arts attracted students from different universities and film practitioners, setting off a new wave in the film industry at XJTLU. The event included three lectures: "The Complete Process of Industrial Film Image Creation - With 'The Wandering Earth 2', 'The Edge of the Blade' as examples", "Color Management Workflow under the Hollywood Industrial System", "Performance and Operation of Sony Film Camera Product Line" and a demonstration and operation workshop of film industrialization equipment.
CCI invited Calligraphic Visual Artist Jiangfeng Pan to give a talk
MSc Cultural and Creative Industries Programme (CCI) invited the Calligraphic Visual Artist Jianfeng Pan to give an online talk on “Brush Communication” on 13 December 2023. Pan is currently in Finland. He has walked a winding creative path, eagerly combining different forms of professional expertise, art sensitivity and cultural knowledge. In this conversation, he shared his understanding of the possibilities of facing contemporary challenges of rapid social transformation and advanced technology, cultivating creative ideas and sharing Chinese heritage with broad international audiences, using Chinese brush as a primary tool.
The 2nd Cultural and Creative Industries Exhibition was successfully held
From 6 to 8 December 2023, the MSc Cultural and Creative Industries Programme organized the 2nd Cultural and Creative Industries Exhibition. Some of the best assignments from four courses in the first semester of the Programme have been selected for display in the exhibition, including FTA421 Introduction to Cultural and Creative Industries, FTA422 Cultural and Media Policies, FTA425 Research Methods for Cultural and Creative Industries, FTA427 Visual Cultures.
The Filmmaking Programme successfully holds a screening event of the documentary "Your Friends"
On 29 November 2023, a screening event for the documentary film "Your Friends" was planned by Yibin Yu, the faculty from the Filmmaking Programme of SoFTA, and was successfully held in the AS Building cinema. The event featured the presence of documentary filmmaker Director Bo Yang, who engaged in close interactions with faculty and students. This screening provided students with the opportunity to engage with professionals in the field of film production, fostering the integration of academic knowledge and practical experience. It offered valuable insights for students, contributing to their future career development.
SoFTA Industry Mentor Talk
On the afternoon of 15 November 2023, the School of Film and TV Arts invited three industry mentors to give talks: Shuhua Mao, Chairman of Suzhou Tiankongzhicheng Books Co., Ltd., Wenle Li, CEO of Jingtiancheng (Suzhou) Cultural Tourism Development Co., Ltd., and Yayu Liu, Vice President of Suzhou SIP Film Association and Deputy Secretary General of Suzhou Art Critics Association. The School Dean, Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, hosted the event. The speakers provided valuable insights and guidance to students on industry trends and career development through sharing and interactive Q&A sessions. The event received enthusiastic participation and engagement from the students.

On 25 October 2023, the Filmmaking Programme organized an event screening the film “No New Wave”, which was selected for the 2022 Pingyao International Film Festival and invited the director to share her experience. “No New Wave” won awards at the 2022 Asian American Film Festival and the 10th Silk Road International Film Festival.
Dr Yiming Chen was invited to attend the 5th Annual CEIBS OB Symposium
Dr Yiming Chen was invited to attend the 5th Annual Organizational Behavior Symposium, which was held at the Central European International Business School in Shanghai on 30 November 2023. This conference focused specifically on cross-cultural communication issues and research publications. Six international top-tier journal editors were invited to share their valuable experience in publishing high-quality papers and responding to reviews.

Dr Yiming Chen was invited to attend the International Conference on Global Cultural and Creative Industry, held by USC-SJTU Institute of Cultural and Creative Industry, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, from 9 to 10 December 2023. The theme of this year’s conference is the Transformation of Global Cultural and Creative Industries in the Digital Civilization Era. At this conference, Dr. Chen paid special attention to the discussion on digital cultural creation and the innovative paths of the talent-education for cultural and creative industries.

Filmmaking student Xuetao Liu won first prize in Researching China 2023
SoFTA Filmmaking student Xuetao Liu’s documentary project ‘Mastery of Life Skills and Social Integration of People with Visual Impairment - based on field research in Shanxi’ won the First Prize in Researching China 2023. On 1 December 2023, the School of Film and TV Arts and South Reviews Researching China (南风窗.调研中国) organized the event “Here Research” to share the project experiences. The TV Production Programme faculty Kaisi Wang supervised the project. At the event, Xuetao Liu showcased her documentary and shared her experience; moreover, media professionals and documentary filmmakers were invited to share their experiences in social and cultural research.
SoFTA students attended the 48-hour National Virtual Production Contest, were shortlisted for the national final contest and won the outstanding in the first round
From 25 to 27 November 2023, SoFTA Lecturer of TV Production Programme Tianzuo Shi and Lecturer of Filmmaking Programme Yiran Yu with Digital Media Arts students went to Beijing to participate in the first round of the 2024 National College Students 48H Virtual Production Filming Contest. This contest is the first professional contest in China that focuses on applying virtual production technology in film and television entertainment. The competition is hosted by the Film Arts Center of the China Literary Federation and Art Circle and organized by the Film Digital Production Working Committee and the China Virtual Reality Technology and Industry Innovation Platform of the China Film Artist Association. SoFTA teachers and students explored the top virtual production technology in the industry during the 48-hour intense production and completed and submitted the first round of work. They achieved excellent results, such as being shortlisted for the national final contest and winning the outstanding in the first round works.
DMA student team wins National Second Prize in the 11th National College Students' Digital Media Technology Works and Creative Competition
Under the guidance of Fang Liu, director of the Digital Media Arts programme at the School of Film and TV Arts, the team's project, "Huqiu Culture and Tourism Cosmic Project," clinched a National Second Prize and a First Prize in Jiangsu Province at the 11th National College Students' Digital Media Technology Works and Creative Competition. Team members included Liwen Zhang, Yu Tang, and Yingjie Si. Another student team, featuring Liwen Zhang, Jianchi Yin, Caiwei Peng, Yuanlu Lv, and Jingxiao Pan, earned a Third Prize in Jiangsu Province with their work, "Kiki's Daydream."
MSc CCI student works were showcased at the XJTLU New Year Reception
The School of Film and TV Arts actively participated in the New Year Reception organized by the President's Office. The theme of the exhibition is Cultural and Creative Industries, which displayed excellent student work from the MSc Cultural and Creative Industries.
All MSc Cultural and Creative Industries Y2 students took internships at top firms
All 117 Y2 Students of MSc Cultural and Creative Industries have all successfully taken internships in top companies, including Suzhou Broadcasting System, Snail Technology, People’s Network, ByteDance, Shanghai Media Group, Ogilvy (Beijing), Sina (Shenzhen) and Shanghai Film Technology Plant, etc. Students have gained both knowledge and experience through these valuable internships.
SoFTA Alumni | Beyond the lens: A filmmaker’s discovery and documentation
Binzhi Zhang started his academic journey at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in 2016, initially pursuing a BSc in Applied Mathematics. However, beyond textbooks and equations, he discovered a passion for photography awakening inside him. One year later, he switched his programme and became one of the first cohorts in BA Filmmaking. Now, he is an award-winning documentary filmmaker.
SoFTA organized the programme admission interview
On 25 November 2023, the SoFTA organized a programme admission interview. The school had received around 230 student registrations from stage 1 students. To ensure the programme that students chose was a correct fit for students, the school arranged 11 interview panels with two expert faculty members. After the comprehensive evaluation, the school sent 179 programme admission offers, including 51 offers to BA Digital Media Arts, 67 offers to BA Filmmaking and 61 offers to BA TV Production.
Tianzou Shi gave a presentation to Year 1 students for their Programme Choice
On 13 November 2023, Tianzuo Shi from the TV Production Programme presented to the Student Career Development Association in BSG02 from 8-9 p.m. He promoted the programmes in SoFTA to year-one students and discussed career opportunities after graduation. He also answered students’ questions & concerns about joining the school. Over 200 Year 1 students attended this event.

19 October 2023, SoFTA organized a school talk introducing the school and programmes to stage 1 students. Professor Li-Chuan Evelyn Mai, Dean of SoFTA, opened the talk and briefed the school and Academy of Film and Creative Technology. Programme Directors of BA TV Production Dr Stephen Andriano-Moore, BA Filmmaking Cheng Fang, and BA Digital Media Arts Fang Liu presented their programmes. The talk provided an excellent opportunity for students to understand the SoFTA and its programmes, and students gained valuable information for their upcoming programme choice. The talk also invited Professor Alvaro Collar, the Dean of the School of Cultural Technology and Dr Jing Sun, Programme Director of BA Arts, Technology and Entertainment with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism, to participate and brief the School of Cultural & Technology and its programme.

MEGA International Creative Media Festival is an annual global event organized by the Academy of Film and Creative Technology of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. MEGA is an international integrated platform for Media, Exhibition, Graphics, and Art concepts.
The 4th MEGA International Creative Media Festival will be held in Suzhou in May 2024 under the theme of "Harmony". It has a more macroscopic perspective, is more cutting-edge and developmental, and is now open to soliciting outstanding short films and creative media works from all over the world.
