The Third Undergraduate Student Conference Successfully Held

SUZHOU —XJTLU School of Humanities and Social Sciences successfully hosted the Third Undergraduate Student Conference on May 18. Over 30 students showcased their knowledge and research achievements from their specialized courses, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and cooperation.

The conference featured nine teacher representatives from various departments, including Dr Chen Chen, Dr Lina Gong, Dr Boyi Huang, Dr Angela Lewis, Dr Marco Pellitteri, Dr Emily Williams, Dr Peter Yacavone, and Dr Ji You. Other faculty members also attended to support the students' presentations.

Dr Qingyang Sun, Vice-President of the Student-Staff Liaison Committee, delivered the opening speech. Dr Sun reviewed the history of student activities in the HSS and expressed gratitude to the faculty for their support of the event. Dr Sun emphasized the importance of this conference in enhancing cross-disciplinary academic exchanges between teachers and students.

Students presented their academic reports in two parallel sessions, covering themes such as current social issues, media communication research, modern China, language, literature, and culture. These presentations demonstrated the students' academic prowess and diverse perspectives. Attendees engaged actively, posing insightful questions and comments, creating a vibrant and stimulating discussion atmosphere.

During the poster session, students showcased their research findings through visually appealing posters, facilitating informal and lively exchanges among participants.

Following the voting by teacher representatives, the conference awarded the following students for their outstanding contributions:

Best Presentation Awards:

  • Shiyue Wu (BA English Studies): "The ‘Sound’ of Cultural Heritage: Naming Practices of ‘Moko’ Drums and Gongs in Alor and East Nusa Tenggara Indonesia"
  • Yiqing Zhao (BA China Studies): "China's Anti-African Student Sentiment on Weibo: A Misogynistic Nationalist Frame"
  • Yuzhi Chen (BA English Studies): "Sagacious and Literary Eve: Judith Murray in the Wake of Mary Wollstonecraft and at the Ebb of the Enlightenment

Best Poster Presentation Awards:

Shiyue Wu from the English Studies program won first place for her linguistic field research on the naming practices of "Moko" bronze drums in Alor, Indonesia. "I am very grateful to the school for providing such a platform for presentation and exchange. This conference has deeply impressed me with the charm and value of academic research. I also want to thank my mentor, Dr Francesco Perono Cacciafoco, for his meticulous guidance and selfless help," said Wu.

The successful hosting of this conference not only provided students with a platform to showcase their academic achievements but also promoted interdisciplinary exchange and cooperation within the school. In the future, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences will continue to host similar academic events, offering more opportunities for students to engage in academic exchanges and presentations, thus fostering the school's academic prosperity and development.
