On June 14, 2024, Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science (SCI) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), led a delegation consisting of Professor Li Yang, Associate Dean of Research and Impact and Dr. Shuihua Wang, Director of PhD Studies and Post Graduate Research Scholarship, SCI and XJTLU to visit the Department of Radiotherapy Department and other related departments at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. The delegation was warmly received by Dr. Yajie Liu, Director of the Radiotherapy Department, Dr. Mengjie Dong, Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, and Dr. Yuhui Ye, Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Healthcare.
The Radiotherapy Department at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was established in January 2017. The department promotes and implements a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach and comprehensive management for cancer patients in Shenzhen, focusing on patient-centered care supported by a team of multidisciplinary experts. This strategy ensures standardized and personalized treatment for patients. The department aims to become a leading intelligent cancer precision radiotherapy center in Shenzhen and South China, striving to be recognized as a key discipline at the provincial level in Guangdong. The Radiotherapy Department covers an area of 928 square meters and includes two linear accelerator treatment rooms, one CT simulator room, and one brachytherapy room. It offers advanced radiotherapy techniques such as 3D-CRT, IMRT, and IGRT.
This event aimed to promote research collaborations between the two institutions and to discuss the latest advancements in frontier medical sciences and AI research. The event started at 10:30 AM, with an opening speech by Dr. Yajie Liu, Director of the Radiotherapy Department at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. Dr. Liu introduced the impressive research activities of the Radiotherapy Department, showcased the department’s significant scientific achievements in recent years, and outlined its future development directions. Dr. Liu stated, “I am delighted to engage in this enjoyable academic collaboration with all the experts present and appreciate the high-quality student training provide by the School of Science at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, particularly its emphasis on granting students ample autonomy and fostering an open discourse and promoting intellectual growth in an internationally stimulating academic atmosphere. We look forward to further strengthening our academic collaborations with your institution, exploring new research directions and models, to advance the development of biosciences, AI and the interdisciplinary field of medical imaging and engineering.”
Later, Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science,XJTLU introduced an overview of the School’s research and teaching, sharing notable achievements across various research fields. Professor Moraros stated, “We hope that through this promising partnership, we can further deepen collaborations between our two institutions and jointly advance scientific knowledge and discovery to the development of medicine and scientific technology that benefits humankind.”
Later, Dr. Shuihua Wang, from SCI at XJTLU, delivered a talk titled “The Application of Machine Learning in Medical Scenarios.” Dr. Wang detailed the application of machine learning in modern healthcare and its potential impact on improving medical efficiency and accuracy. Dr. Wang stated, “This event can effectively promote interdisciplinary collaborations between AI and biomedicine, and enhance our research capabilities and optimize clinical levels of support provided to patients. Through collaborations with Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, we can jointly develop innovative solutions to solve the current medical problems faced by our society.”
Finally, this visit was concluded by Physicist, Zhe Zhang, from Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. Experts and scholars engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges around their respective research fields, sharing the latest research results and application experiences. This collegial activity and discussions provided a valuable learning and communication platform for researchers from both institutions to get to know each other better and laid a strong foundation for future research collaborations.
The successful holding of this event marks an important step in the promising collaboration between certain Departments of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital and the School of Sciences at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. In the future, both sides will continue to strengthen communication and collaborations, jointly engage in research discovery and promote advancement of medicine and scientific technology, and make greater contributions to social development and human health.
