Visit from Yangzhou University: College of Bioscience and Biotechnology

On June 3rd, representatives from the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Yangzhou University visited the School of Science at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). Led by the academic staff of XJTLU, the delegation from Yangzhou University, including Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee Lei Guo and 16 students from the Strong Foundation Class, toured the campus in the morning. This provided them with an initial understanding of XJTLU's culture and educational resources. The afternoon sharing section was hosted by Dr. Weiwei Dai from the Department of Biological Sciences, with participation of Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science, and other academic staff representatives.

Professor John Moraros welcomed the visitors and emphasized the importance of a people-oriented philosophy in the School of Science. He highlighted the significance of the collaborative growth of students and staff in the educational journey for the development of the school.

Academic Staff Sharing Session

During the event, Dr. Shuihua Wang provided a detailed introduction to XJTLU's Bioinformatics programme and doctoral projects, covering Environmental Science, Chemistry, Public Health, and Biological Sciences, as well as application processes and the advantages of studying at XJTLU. She also shared information about scholarship policies, research directions, academic staff strength, and academic exchange opportunities for the doctoral programme.

Dr. Yong Shen and Dr. Yongtao Zhu introduced the undergraduate and master's programmes in the Department of Biological Sciences, respectively. Dr. Shen emphasized XJTLU's international teaching and research atmosphere, academic staff strength, and cutting-edge research directions in Biological Sciences. Dr. Zhu focused on the master's programme curriculum, professional features, and research team status, encouraging students with a passion for research to apply.

Founded in 1998, the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Yangzhou University offers three undergraduate programmes: Biological Science (education major), Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutics. It also offers Doctor degree in two first-level disciplines, Biology and Education (Biological Science), Master degrees in Biology and Ecology, and professional Master degrees in the Disciplines of Teaching (Biology) and Engineering (Biotechnology and Bioengineering). Additionally, it hosts a postdoctoral research station in Biology, assessed as excellent in the 2020 national evaluation.

Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee Lei Guo introduced the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Yangzhou University, covering discipline settings, research, teaching platforms, student work, and employment. She specifically mentioned the "Three-in-One" practice teaching platform launched by Yangzhou University, aimed at enhancing conditions and improving the quality of talent cultivation.

During the Q&A session, academic staff and students from both universities engaged in in-depth discussions on summer research arrangements, the cultivation of scientific literacy, and daily student life. XJTLU academic staff emphasized the importance of research experience for future studies and introduced the summer SURF project to promote research exchange and collaboration between students from both universities.

This visit provided a valuable platform for the academic staff and students of the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Yangzhou University and the School of Science at XJTLU. It fostered mutual understanding and laid the groundwork for future educational and research collaborations.
