Hosted by the Chinese Association of Physiological Sciences (CAPS), the International Congress of Physiological Sciences (ICPS-2024) was successfully held between 22 to 25 August 2024 in the city of Qingdao, China.

An important quadrennial event for physiologists from China and around the world, it gathered over 1600 delegates from >20 countries worldwide, and included members of Chinese Academy of Sciences, European Academy and National Academies of Sciences, as well as other esteemed delegates in attendance. The Congress provided a vibrant global platform for researchers, educators, and students to come together and exchange knowledge, ideas, and research findings in the field of physiology.

The School of Science (SCI) was well represented at this meeting, attended by a team of faculty, staff and students from XJTLU. Professor Alan Kaluev, a globally renowned neuroscientist delivered an invited talk and organized the Zebrafish Neuroscience symposium, where a researcher from the Department of Biological Sciences, Longen Yang, gave another talk on nutritional neuroscience models. Additionally, ten Biology undergraduate students from their laboratory in the School of Science at XJTLU (Jiyi Wang, Jiayou Jiang, Huiling Cai, Kai He, Shulei He, Yixin Qin, Haoyu Feng, Yucheng Liu, Ruiyu Li, Chaoming Wang) also attended the meeting in person.

The Congress featured presentations, workshops, and seminars by international experts in the field of physiology, as well as a vibrant poster session. Professor Kaluev commented that “By attending this international meeting, SCI, XJTLU students were able to gather important insights into the latest research findings and advancements in the field, as well as take advantage of a unique opportunity for networking and building connections that can lead to collaborations and future research and career opportunities.”

The sessions the SCI, XJTLU students attended also helped them to enhance their knowledge and skills, ultimately leading to their further professional development, and exposing them to diverse translational perspectives in this important dynamic biomedical science. The social program of the visit included a sunny day tour of the beautiful and renowned Laoshan National Forest Park in Qingdao.

Overall, this was a wonderful and memorable scholarly experience for the students from SCI, XJTLU. It helps build a strong foundation on which they can further expand their research careers on the path to attaining future success.
