In Dambokbun Village, Cambodia, Dr Daniel Yonto from the Department of Urban Planning and Design at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University attempts to identify broken clean water pumps and engage the villagers in determining suitable locations for new ones. This initiative aims to enhance access to clean water and foster sustainable development.

Dr Yonto emphasised the importance of community involvement. He says: “We hope to ensure that resources are well-allocated by prioritising local participation and involving residents in the decision-making process.”

“This project is not just about fixing pumps; it’s about empowering local residents and catalysing further collaboration.”

“Beyond the immediate benefits of improved access to clean water, we also aim to work towards long-term development goals such as improved education, livelihood opportunities, and infrastructure enhancement through the use of Generative-AI.”

“By centering community involvement and sustainability, we want to build a resilient and self-sufficient Dambokbun Village.”

The initiative has attracted significant attention and support from local organisations, including the Community Training Organization for Development and the Dambokbun Village Community Development Committee in Battambang, Cambodia.

The project is expected to be an exemplary model for other communities facing similar problems. It paves the way for Cambodia to achieve a brighter, more resilient future.
