22 Sep 2025

Dr Jinbo He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioinformatics, the School of Science, at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). He received his PhD from the University of Macau in 2018. Before joining XJTLU, Dr He was an Assistant Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and an associate professor at Hunan University.

Teaching / Research field

Dr He is currently serving as the module leader for BIO404/407 (Research Project) at the postgraduate level, and he is also supporting tutorials for BIO233 (Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases in Public Health) at the undergraduate level.

His research focuses on health psychology, with a particular emphasis on eating disorders, body image, obesity, social stigma, and related intervention and prevention approaches. It is highly interdisciplinary, integrating advanced quantitative methods, digital health solutions, and cross-cultural perspectives. He actively collaborates with scholars worldwide, and his work has been supported by multiple research grants, including one funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In addition, He serves on the editorial boards of Body Image, the International Journal of Eating Disorders, and Eating and Weight Disorders, and he is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Eating Disorders.

Beyond his current focus, Dr He's research interests include applying big data and artificial intelligence to mental health challenges, examining health behavior patterns across cultures, and developing scalable digital health interventions.

"Looking forward, I aim to build interdisciplinary collaborations that integrate psychology, bioinformatics, AI, and public health, with the overarching goal of translating research into practical benefits that improve individual well-being and population health."

Through an interdisciplinary approach, Dr He has sought to reveal how risk and protective factors interact across different contexts and over time. These findings provide valuable support for theoretical development, the refinement of assessment tools, and evidence-based interventions. At the same time, He is also deeply committed to translating research outcomes into widely accessible and scalable interventions. To this end, He has developed several digital and social media–based programs designed to promote healthier eating habits, improve body image, and assist with weight management. These initiatives not only aim to support individuals at higher risk of eating disorders or obesity but also hope to enhance mental health and quality of life across a broader population.

Reason to join XJTLU

"I chose to join Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University because it uniquely blends the strengths of Chinese and Western education systems, offering an international perspective while staying closely connected to Chinese society. XJTLU provides an excellent platform where I can integrate research with student training. As for Suzhou, its harmonious blend of rich cultural heritage and rapid modernization makes it not only a beautiful city to live in but also an inspiring environment for academic research and teaching."
