AoLNS Introduction

Academy Overview

In September 2026, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) launched a strategic disciplinary restructuring amid the digital and AI revolution in education, merging the School of Science (established September 2020) and Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy (founded November 2020, a flagship project of XJTLU’s 3.0 Industry Innovation Ecosystem) to establish the Academy of Life and Natural Sciences (AoLNS). AoLNS acts as the core flagship carrier driving XJTLU’s transition from the 3.0 Industry Innovation Ecosystem to the 4.0 Learning-Innovation Social Ecosystem.

All teaching, research, and industry collaboration activities are hosted within the 77,500 m² Life Sciences Building, which provides 50,000 m² of dedicated research space and 15,000 m² of industry-education integration zones. Construction began in March 2023; the building entered trial operation in February 2026 and held its official opening ceremony on 31 March 2026. Designed as an internationally benchmarked research facility and a demonstration platform for integrated academia-industry-government-society collaboration, the Life Sciences Building marks the official launch of XJTLU’s social-ecology campus development strategy.

AoLNS inherits the cross-disciplinary fundamental research strengths of the former School of Science and the mature biomedical industrial ecosystem of Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy. It breaks down silos across biology, chemistry, materials, environmental sciences, pharmacy, statistics and emerging interdisciplinary fields, forming an integrated system spanning fundamental natural science, biomedical R&D, cutting-edge cross-technology and industrial translation. Aligned with Suzhou Industrial Park’s No.1 Industry initiative and the construction of a world-class biomedical industrial landmark “China Pharma Valley”, AoLNS features multi-stakeholder academia-industry-government-society collaboration as its core characteristic, building a global innovation hub for life and natural sciences.

The academy employs over 130 academic staff from more than 10 countries worldwide, with a student body exceeding 3,000 across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. It comprises six subject areas and six leading research centres, offering 10 undergraduate degrees and over 10 specialised postgraduate research tracks, fully absorbing all original programmes from the two predecessor schools.

Over its 20-year development, XJTLU has evolved through three educational models: 1.0 Professional Elite Education, 2.0 Industry-Integrated Elite Education, and 3.0 Industry Innovation Ecosystem Education. As the key practice platform for advancing to the 4.0 Learning-Innovation Social Ecosystem, AoLNS erases boundaries among campus, industry, and society, building an open community for lifelong learning, entrepreneurship, and co-innovation accessible to learners of all ages, enabling the deep integration of education, research, industrial R&D, and public services.

Mission & Vision
