Team Introduction
“Lanting” is an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) brand founded by youth from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. We are dedicated to the creative transformation and commercial application of cultural heritage, channeling ancient craftsmanship into daily objects that can offer solace in modern times, and upholding the brand philosophy and cultural values of “Seeing People, Seeing Objects, Seeing Life”. Through three business segments—original cultural products, immersive cultural activities, and digital research & development, we aim to build a new cultural space bridging tradition and the future, fostering mutual enrichment between culture and the self.

Application Scenarios
1. Customized Cultural and Creative Products
The team has skillfully integrated intangible cultural heritage (ICH) elements into cultural and creative products through a youth-oriented aesthetic approach. On one hand, by collaborating with ICH inheritors, it has ensured a dynamic balance between innovative designs and traditional cultural essence. On the other hand, partnerships with a number of high-quality source factories (specializing in metal, acrylic, ceramics, etc.) have guaranteed the craftsmanship, quality and delivery time of products, enabling the timely design and supply of exquisite, warm-hearted cultural and creative products for clients. At present, the team has provided customized cultural and creative products for multiple departments of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, including the Admissions & Career Services Office, the School of Design and Pu Innovation Hub.

3. Cultural Digitalization
As the operating team of Ronghetang—a campus initiative of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). We have been exploring step by step how to build a full-cycle workflow that enables everyone to design and materialize their own exclusive cultural and creative products from scratch, by leveraging digital technologies such as XR and 3D printing. While preserving traditional culture through digital means, we deliver an experience that is both entertaining and functional. Looking ahead, we also plan to host more related sharing and experience activities at Ronghetang (Hall of SSS).

Project Story
The vision of Lanting is to realize the mutual nurturing between culture and people by designing warm cultural products and engaging cultural activities. It also aims to create a cultural space that connects the past, present and future, healing everyone who encounters it in this fast-paced life.
The founding of Lanting originated from an encounter with a kite festival. Team members volunteered at the first Hangzhou International Kite Festival, where they learned about the diversity of kite competitions and also discovered a severe age gap among the main participants. Meanwhile, team member Xu Yanlun’s grandfather is one of the earliest craftsmen of miniature kites in Hangzhou. Every step of making his kites—from whittling the thin bamboo sticks for the kite frames to cutting and pasting the soft covering for the wings—is done by hand. Inspired by this, the team began to explore ways to draw more people’s attention to these exquisite handcrafted works and encourage their participation in culture-related activities.
With this idea in mind, the team participated in the 2024 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). They proposed the concept of rejuvenating intangible cultural heritage (ICH), created kite-themed IP, integrated Gen Z aesthetics with traditional culture, and designed distinctive cultural symbol products by linking ICH craftsmen with original cultural and creative factories. After the final, the team collaborated with teachers from XJTLU’s Admissions Office to design a co-branded campus metal keychain incorporating the elements of the intangible cultural heritage paper kite. This keychain was distributed as a souvenir to teachers and students of various universities during XJTLU’s admission season. In the meantime, Lanting became the first student maker team to obtain official brand authorization from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.
The design inspiration of the Paper Kite Keychain comes from XJTLU’s school motto “Light and Wings”. It adopts the shape of the paper kite, a representative project of national intangible cultural heritage (ICH), implying that XJTLU helps students spread their wings to pursue dreams. Embedded on the chest of the paper kite are elements of XJTLU’s “Shield” and “Liverpool Pavilion”. For the wings, patterns of “Eight Aquatic Delicacies of the Yangtze River Delta”—a symbolic feature of Suzhou and the Jiangnan water town—are used, including lotus root, water chestnut, wild rice stem, water shield, arrowhead, water chestnut, gorgon fruit and water celery. These designs reflect the integration, coexistence and vigorous development of Chinese and Western cultures at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU).
Subsequently, we began designing cultural and creative products that integrate cultural elements with campus features for more school departments. For example, we created custom cultural and creative items for graduates of the Civil Engineering discipline: fridge magnets shaped like Chuihua Gates, which incorporate the intangible cultural heritage mortise and tenon structure and symbolize the spirit of forging ahead with perseverance. We also developed official merchandise for the Taicang Global Dream Chaser Entrepreneurship Competition (Dream Chaser). The keychains, designed as round fans, feature endless interlocking patterns and thriving curly branch patterns—elements that echo the entrepreneurs’ perseverance and the continuous expansion of their dreams.
In addition, we have also launched a DIY workshop featuring 3D-printed voiceprint rings. The unique sound wave of each participant is used to form the outer contour of the ring, and then 3D printing technology is applied to materialize the 3D model, preserving the voice memory of a fleeting moment.
