The Chinese Language Division provides a high-quality platform for learning Mandarin Chinese, understanding China, and building cultural exchanges. The Division offers language modules to diverse learners, including international undergraduate and postgraduate students, exchange students, and visiting students. Our international students come from countries including Australia, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, the Division organises Chinese cultural workshops and field trips, guiding students to gain deeper insights into Suzhou and China. We also work closely with XJTLU’s Department of China Studies to develop and deliver modules for the BA China Studies programme’s Teaching Chinese as an International Language pathway.
Who are we?
We are a dynamic and forward-thinking Division committed to supporting international students in developing effective Chinese communication skills and cultural understanding. Over time, we have cultivated three distinctive strengths: embracing technology-enhanced language learning and teaching, fostering a diverse and international learning community, and designing modules that are meaningfully connected to local contexts.
Our teaching is student-centred, interactive, and grounded in real-world communication. We prioritise practical language use, enabling students to confidently apply what they learn. Our lecturers actively develop tailored Chinese teaching materials based on everyday scenarios. They integrate a wide range of educational technologies – including the XJTLU Learning Mall, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality – to enrich the learning experience. Our collaborative and cross-cultural learning environments bring together Chinese and international students, encouraging the mutual understanding and cultural exchange at the heart of our language education.
