RCE-Life and Health Management (RCE-LHM)

About

The Research Centre of Excellence (RCE) in Life and Health Management (LHM) was established in 2026 to develop and coordinate inter-school research initiatives and activities, and to support research and teaching centred on interdisciplinary themes. By bringing together expertise across schools and disciplines, the RCE aims to advance research that addresses the complex challenges of life and health management in contemporary society.

Research areas and priorities

The RCE – LHM prioritizes interdisciplinary research that bridges health, wellbeing, and management. Our current research areas and priorities include:

  • Wellbeing and quality of life — measuring and understanding wellbeing across populations and life stages.
  • Health management and policy — examining health systems, health expenditure, and their implications for individual and societal outcomes.
  • Climate change and its impact on health and wellbeing — investigating the direct and indirect pathways through which climate change affects health and wellbeing.
  • Social determinants of health and wellbeing — examining how interpersonal, community, institutional, and policy factors shape health and wellbeing outcomes

Research activities and opportunities

The RCE–LHM advances interdisciplinary research in two complementary ways: it organises cross-school collaborative projects, seminars, and workshops, and it creates opportunities for for academic staff and students to carry out joint research.

Current activities include contributing to and editing the World Happiness Report published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, and writing and editing the GBA-ASEAN Happiness Report for the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

The RCE – LHM also leads and participates in several research projects. Its research project, “Climate Change and Subjective Wellbeing,” examines how environmental change shapes individual and societal wellbeing. In addition, the RCE – LHM is engaged in a joint research project with the Design School examining the relationship between the built environment, behaviour and wellbeing.

Research partners and collaborations

The RCE – LHM collaborates with other schools within the University, such as the Design School and the Academy of Life and Natural Sciences, as well as with leading research institutions and international organisations worldwide.

Our partners include the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta, Dalhousie University, Korea University, Singapore Management University, and the UN SDSN.

Through these collaborations, the RCE – LHM seeks to strengthen interdisciplinary research, share expertise and resources, and extend the reach and impact of its work in life and health management.
