About

The Department of China Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University was established in 2014 and is still in its initial growth phase. The department is concerned with China’s history and culture, society and politics, business and economics. Its staff come from all over the world, and all are bilingual.

XJTLU’s location in Suzhou provides the department with added advantages – Suzhou has been at the centre of China’s culture and light industry for over a thousand years. These days the Suzhou Industrial Park, where XJTLU is located, is one of China’s main centres of light industrial production with a GDP per capita in excess of that found in the United Kingdom, for example.

The department teaches a BA in China Studies, a MA in China Studies and runs the China Studies Year in China programme open to students from all over the world. There are opportunities to learn Chinese at XJTLU and the department has a growing PhD programme. All staff research and publish in their own discipline, as well as in the field of China studies. The department also has an active community education programme about China.
