Call for Papers

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) and

Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI)

announce

The 10th Conference on Asia and Pacific Economies (CAPE)

May 26-27, 2023

Suzhou, China

XJTLU and ADBI invite submission of papers for this two-day event on topics related to the Asia and Pacific economies. We are looking for original and high-quality unpublished research papers in theoretical and empirical economic and social issues. This is the flagship event organized under the Society for the Advancement in Economic Studies (SAES) which promotes the interdisciplinary research across the academics, business communities and policy makers.

Topics of the General Sessions

The central theme of the conference is related to the Chinese economy vis-à-vis the other Asian and Pacific economies. The Asia-Pacific region underwent market-oriented reforms, globalization, economic and financial regionalization, social changes, etc. in recent decades. China has played a central role in this development and successfully emerged as the world’s second largest economy. Nevertheless, the region is experiencing some hardships in recent times amidst global headwinds induced by both regional and global factors. The continuing COVID-19 pandemic, occurrences in geo-political state of affairs, climate change, energy crisis, and the fourth industrial revolution continue to bring about uncertainties and challenges that might alter future economic landscape in the region. The emergence of internal and external shocks raises new questions that are worth debating in the conference.

We thus invite high-quality papers on the topics that include but are not restricted to: economic integration; green finance; innovation; social and environmental sustainability, etc.

Topics of the ADBI Special Sessions

This is the eighth year that ADBI is organizing joint special sessions. The topics for the ADBI special sessions include the following:

Digitalization, financial inclusion, and financial literacy; small and medium-sized enterprise finance; and sustainable development goals and climate change.

Special Issues of Economic Issues and Singapore Economic Review

To celebrate the 10th CAPE, we will collaborate with two prestigious journals Economic Issues and Singapore Economic Review to have the CAPE-EI and CAPE-SER Special Issues. We welcome the submission of high-quality papers to these two special issues.

Format of the Conference

Depending upon the pandemic situation, the conference may be held in ‘blended’ format. For participants who could travel to China and join the conference in-person, we would invite them for on-site presentations. And for participants who could not join the conference in person, we would host online presentations.

Funding Opportunities

There is limited funding to support some on-site participants. We provide economy-class transport (airline or train) to Suzhou and up to three nights’ accommodation. If the funding opportunities are exhausted, the applicant may also attend as a self-funded participant given that the paper is accepted for presentation.

Submissions

Full paper written in English or extended abstract with detailed description of data, research design, main results, and contributions (around 8,000 words) must be submitted to the CAPE submission portal no later than March 20, 2023 containing the title, name, and affiliation of the author(s), contact information, and the appropriate fields (JEL classifications). Early submissions with a full paper are preferred.

The working language of the conference is English. If there are two or more authors, please identify who will be presenting. Selected papers will be notified by mid-April or earlier. For those submitting an abstract, a full paper should be submitted no later than March 31, 2023.

Participation

All presenters will be requested to serve as discussants and provide comments on at least one paper. Since all papers are equally important, all participants are expected to attend both days.
