The Importance of “Smart Grid and Data Processing” showcased at XJTLU

The Centre for Smart Grid and Information Convergence (CeSGIC) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) held its first international workshop last weekend with scholars from China, South Korea and Australia. It attracted over 30 participants and was supported by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at XJTLU, the Industrial Technology Cluster and the Research and Graduate Studies Office at XJTLU.

This workshop aims to become a premier forum to bring together scholars from the external and internal, domestic and overseas academic institutes to exchange original ideas, discuss innovative designs, address important problems and share unique experiences in the field of smart grid and data processing.

Topics during the workshop ranged from dispatch planning of wind power generation to the data processing for cloud computing which led to inspiring discussions amongst attendees.

Professor David O’Connor, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at XJTLU, extended his warm welcome to the guests and emphasised that, with the inexorable increase in energy demand globally and particularly in China and India, the theme of the workshop is “amazingly important”. He hoped that this first international workshop would trigger innovative thinking and create new collaborative bonds between the participants.

Dr Sanghyuk Lee, Director of CeSGIC, said that CeSGIC was first proposed to XJTLU in February, 2013 and was approved in July, 2014. It is a truly multi-disciplinary research centre with its members from four different departments at XJTLU and a number of external partners including Smart Grid Research Institute of Hohai University, China and the Institute for Information and Electronics Research at Inha University, Korea. Dr Lee told the audience that since it was launched, CeSGIC has promoted smart grid and information convergence technology aiming to bring together interesting researchers and experts on this area for mutually-beneficial collaborations.

This one-day international workshop consisted of seven presentations by four external scholars and three other colleagues from XJTLU, they were: Professor Choi San Shing, Professor (retired) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and currently an Adjunct Professor from Curtin University, Australia; Professor Young Chol Kim and Professor Keun Ho Ryu from Chungbuk National University, Korea; Professor Yue Yuan from Hohai University, Nanjing, China; Dr Kejun Qian, Dr Joseph Kim and Dr Huiqing Wen from XJTLU as the three internal speakers demonstrating the latest research developments of XJTLU about smart grid.

Dr. Sanghyuk Lee announced at the end of the workshop: “The next CeSGIC workshop is to be held in 2016 and much more is to be achieved through the consistent striving efforts of the centre members and deepening collaborations with the partners of CeSGIC.”
