Dr. Xin-Feng (Edwin) Ruan from International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool Univeisity (XJTLU) has recently been appointed as the Distinguished Professor of Jiangsu Province for a three-year term. This honor not only recognizes Dr. Ruan's personal work and scientific achievements but also affirms high expectations for the scientific research strength and future potential of IBSS and its faculty.

Reflecting on the application process, Dr. Ruan credited his five years of teaching experience in New Zealand and the publication of over thirty papers in SSCI journals as contributing factors to his election. Dr. Ruan, initially studying Material Science and Engineering at the undergraduate level, expanded his knowledge continuously. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance in 2017 from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Before joining IBSS, he held positions at Auckland University of Technology and the University of Otago from 2018 to 2023.
Currently, Dr. Ruan has achieved significant milestones in the field of derivatives and asset pricing. His paper, investigating the economic mechanisms of volatility derivative trading and explaining market anomalies, provides a strong theoretical basis for related market policy-making. This paper has been published in JFM, ABDC-A*. Looking ahead, Dr. Ruan plans to continue his research in this area, seeking to discover more novel perspectives, uncover intriguing data, and establish deep collaborations with leading scholars and institutions both domestically and internationally.
Regarding his future plans, Dr. Ruan stated: "I plan to focus on the tasks and goals of the three-year distinguished professorship. Utilizing the research funds provided by the provincial government, my first priority is to expand academic cooperation both domestically and internationally, thereby enhancing my academic level and influence. Secondly, I aim to establish a robust research team at XJTLU to aid in the development of our research backbone and young teachers. Thirdly, I will actively pursue major national and provincial research projects to achieve significant landmark results. Lastly, I intend to expand exchange and cooperation with industry and government, actively engage in the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and provide think-tank support for government policy-making. This includes becoming an advisor to the government, aiming to better serve society."
Dr. Xinfeng (Edwin) Ruan (阮鑫丰) is a Senior Associate Professor of Finance in the International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi'an Jiaotong- Liverpool University (XJTLU). He earned his PhD in Finance from the University of Otago in 2017 and an MSc in Operations Research & Management (Research Area: Financial Mathematics and Financial Engineering) from the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in 2014. Prior to joining XJTLU, he worked at the University of Otago from 2019 to 2023 and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Auckland University of Technology from 2018 to 2019.
The Jiangsu Province Distinguished Professor programme, established by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province, is a talent initiative designed to attract high-level talents from both China and abroad. The programme’s objective is to advance various disciplines to both domestic and international levels, thereby enhancing the quality of talent cultivation and technological innovation in universities. Over a three-year term, the programme provides scientific research funding of no less than 2 million yuan for natural sciences and 1 million yuan for humanities and social sciences per distinguished professor. The management and evaluation of distinguished professors are conducted based on predetermined targets set for their term.
