  • Summer Experience: Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) exchange programme
  • Nationality: Indonesian

The journey toward my Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) exchange began with an unexpected email from the programme coordinator. Though my dean had previously mentioned a potential exchange initiative between my university, Taylor’s University in Malaysia, and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in China, I had only a brief understanding about the programme.

But, the programme immediately piqued my interest. I found myself anticipating the possibility of participating in this unique opportunity. However, when I received the email detailing the specifics of the programme, my initial excitement changed into hesitation. The timing of the programme and some personal challenges made me hesitant. I knew that joining the programme would add more responsibility to my already full plate. There were sacrifices to be made, and I worried about becoming overwhelmed. It was a difficult decision.

Seeking clarity, I consulted with the programme coordinator, some close friends, and my mom. Their support and encouragement reassured me. They reminded me that this was a chance to challenge myself, to step outside of my comfort zone, and to grow both personally and academically. Because of their confidence in me, I decided to take the opportunity and submitted my application. Two weeks later, an email arrived confirming my acceptance into the programme. The reality of what lay ahead began to sink in, and before I realised, I found myself in Suzhou, China, alongside four fellow students from Taylor’s University, ready to embark on this research fellowship at XJTLU.

My first impression of Suzhou was one of awe. The city is stunning, with its wonderful architecture and beautiful landscaped gardens. The beauty of the city was undeniable, yet as I settled in, I quickly encountered challenges that tempered my initial enthusiasm. The first few days were rough. The language barrier was a significant obstacle for me, making even simple tasks really hard. My inability to communicate effectively left me feeling isolated and frustrated. Additionally, we faced several logistical issues that added up our stress. It was a difficult start, and there were moments when I questioned my decision to participate in the programme.

Fortunately, the XJTLU team was incredibly supportive. They regularly checked in on us and provided assistance with the issues we faced. Their dedication and willingness to help made a world of difference, easing our transition and helping us navigate the complexities of living and studying in a foreign country. As the programme got started, my initial struggles began to fade. The campus community at XJTLU was warm and welcoming, and I quickly felt at ease. Despite the ongoing language barrier, my SURF teammates from both XJTLU and Taylor’s University were really helping me adapt. Their support was invaluable, allowing me to overcome the challenges I faced.

Culturally, Suzhou was unlike anything I had experienced before. Coming from Indonesia and having studied in Malaysia, I was struck by the differences in everyday life and social norms. Yet, these differences only deepened my appreciation for the city and its people. I was constantly amazed by the rich history and culture in every corner of Suzhou. My time in Suzhou was not without its difficulties, but it was an overwhelmingly positive and transformative experience. I learned the value of stepping out of my comfort zone, of embracing new challenges, and of being open to the unknown. The opportunity to conduct research at XJTLU while exploring the cultural and historical richness of Suzhou was an experience I will cherish forever.

Reflecting on my journey, I realise that the struggles I faced were an essential part of my growth. The challenges taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of seeking help when needed. I gained not only academic knowledge but also a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. If I were given the choice to do it all over again, without hesitation, I would choose Suzhou. The city’s beauty, the friendships, and the lessons I learned have left an unforgettable mark on me. My research exchange at XJTLU was more than just an academic transformation it was a journey of personal discovery and growth.

In conclusion, my summer in Suzhou was a defining moment in my academic career and personal development. The experience pushed me beyond my limits, expanded my horizons, and enriched my understanding of different cultures. It was, in every sense, a transformative journey, one that I will carry with me throughout my life.
