Clarivate recently announced the 2024 “Highly Cited Researchers” list, and Dr Shuihua Wang, Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioinformatics at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), has been recognised for the fifth consecutive year.
This year’s list features 6,636 researchers from over 1,200 institutions across 59 countries and regions, resulting in 6,886 recognitions. The Chinese mainland accounted for 1,405 recognitions, with Dr Wang among them.
Dr Wang expresses her gratitude, saying: “It is an honour to be selected for the fifth consecutive year. This recognition marks a significant achievement in my research career and also motivates me to continue striving for excellence. I am committed to maintaining high research standards and exploring innovative applications at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedical sciences.”
The 2024 “Highly Cited Researchers” list is based on highly cited papers published between January 2013 and December 2023. These papers rank in the top 1% in terms of citation frequency within their respective fields and years of publication in the Web of Science database.
Dr Wang was recognised in the “Cross-Field” category for her pioneering work applying artificial intelligence (AI) to biomedical data analysis. Her research spans multimodal data analysis, weakly supervised segmentation, medical imaging processing, and data interpretation. Among her influential publications are studies using machine learning to track protein traffic in live bacterial cells, harnessing unlabelled data to enhance biomedical interpretable learning in multimodal biomedical data, and developing a multimodal hybrid fusion network for comprehensive geriatric assessment.
She highlights the transformative potential of AI in biomedicine: “AI applications in biomedicine drive academic innovation and create new opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Looking ahead, I aim to expand my research to include multimodal biomaterial data analysis, financial, and medical health data analysis.”
Dr Wang received her PhD from Nanjing University in 2017 and has held research and teaching positions at Loughborough University and the University of Leicester in the UK. She joined XJTLU’s School of Science in September 2023.
Reflecting on her time at XJTLU, Dr Wang says: “The University’s open and innovative research environment, combined with advanced infrastructure such as high-end computing resources, convenient database access, and research funding programmes, has significantly supported my work. The School of Science fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork, enabling me to focus on advancing innovative AI applications in biomedicine. I look forward to partnering with more exceptional scholars and students to tackle global challenges and contribute to academic and societal development.”
