Recently, Ying Lo, a Malaysian PhD student from the Department of Civil Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, was awarded the 2023 Jiangsu Provincial Education Department (DoE) Scholarship. The scholarship is open to all current international PhD students at XJTLU and with only one recipient.

With the platform provided by XJTLU and the guidance of her supervisor Dr Cheng Zhang, Lo has contributed to the publications of two journal and six conference articles in just two years after enrolment, covering topics such as building information modelling (BIM), 3D reconstruction, and point cloud data processing techniques.

Lo says that in addition to focusing on keeping a good academic performance, she actively participates in various research activities and seeks opportunities to exercise herself as a leader in various projects.

Lo has won Excellent Award for Artificial Intelligence Solutions in Jiangsu Province and 3rd Prize in Science and Technology Innovation Track of the 2nd National Innovation Contest for Intelligent Construction and Management.

In addition, she has collaborated with external companies and organisations in her research, including Suzhou Erjian Company, Zhongyifeng Company, and Wujiang Water Affair Bureau, further enhancing the reputation of XJTLU. She believes that working hard on research and solving real-world problems are key elements in winning a scholarship.

Dr Zhang says that Lo is a very intelligent and diligent scholar with a passion for research and expanding the frontiers of knowledge.

“As a team leader, she has supervised several masters and undergraduate students in their final research projects, demonstrating her leadership skills. In addition, Lo supports the course as a teaching assistant, and her tutoring and assistance has greatly enhanced the learning experience and academic abilities of the students.

“Her unwavering passion for research, coupled with her diligent learning attitude and eagerness to acquire new knowledge, as well as her extremely strong communication skills, makes her an excellent PhD student and an ideal student for a supervisor,” Dr Zhang says.
