Director of the Unit

Professor Qiufeng Wang

Dr Qiufeng Wang, Professor, the Head of Department of Intelligent Science at School of Advanced Technology, and Deputy Dean of Academy of Artificial Intelligence (AOA), in Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). He received the Ph.D degree in Pattern Recognition and Intelligence Systems from Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA) in July 2012, and won Presidential Scholarship of Chinese Academy of Sciences. During 2012 to 2013, he worked as an Assistant Professor at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR) in CASIA . During 2013 to 2017, he worked at Microsoft and joined in XJTLU in Feb. 2017.; His research interests include pattern recognition, machine learning, and language modeling, more specially, the document analysis and recognition. Dr Wang has published 70+ papers, including IEEE T-PAMI, and published one book about deep learning in Springer. His research has been supported by both government and industry, including NSFC young programme, NSFC general programme, and CCF-Tencent.

Senior Associate Professor Xiaobo Jin

Xiaobo Jin’s research interests include machine learning, internet mining, and computer vision. He earned his Ph.D. in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems from the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition and Intelligence Systems from Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His teaching experience encompasses courses in programming, algorithm design and data structures, and image and vision. He has published over 70 papers in journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on NNLS, TIP, ICLR, CVPR, ECAI, ICDM, ACCV, Pattern Recognition, Information Sciences, IEEE Access, Cognitive Computation, Neucomputation, and ICPR. He has led two National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects (U1804159, 61103138) and participated in four others. As a leader or co-leader, he has achieved first place in internet big data classification and content quality assessment competitions, such as the Web Spam Challenge 2007/2008, ECML 2010 Discovery Challenge, and Baidu Cup Challenge 2016. In 2021, he was awarded the title of Young and Middle-Aged Academic Leader in Jiangsu Province’s Qing-Lan Project.

Associate Professor Xi Yang

Dr Xi Yang is currently an Associate Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. She received PhD degree, B.Sc. degree and M.Sc. degree with distinction from the University of Liverpool, U.K.. Her research interests lie in the field of Bayesian probabilistic approaches to machine learning, pattern recognition and deep learning. She has recently worked on Domain Generalization and Adaptation, Text-Image Synthesis, Outlier Detection,  and Medical Image Analysis.  Dr Yang has published over 40 papers including international authoritative journals and conferences such as IEEE T- Cybernetics,  IEEE T-KDE, Pattern Recognition, NeurIPS,CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, AAAI, etc..  Her research has received support from both government and industry, such as NSFC Young programme, and  NSFC Major-cultivation  programme. She was honored as a Jiangsu Province Innovation & Entrepreneurship Doctor in 2020 and received the Outstanding Talent in Science and Education Award in 2022.

Professor Kaizhu Huang

Professor with tenure at Duke Kunshan University, adjunct professor and P.h.D advisor at Wuhan University, and visiting professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. He has previously served as a visiting professor at the University of Stirling and an agreement professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004. In 2006, he was awarded the President’s Award from the Fujitsu Research Institute. In 2011, he received the Young Scientist Award from the Asia-Pacific Neural Network Society. In 2014, he was awarded the High-level Talent Award for Urgently Needed Positions from Colleges and Research Institutions in Suzhou. He has won multiple best paper or nomination awards at AI conferences both domestically and internationally, including the 2024 IEEE ICDM 10-Year Highest Impact Paper Award. From December 2004 to September 2012, he held positions at the Fujitsu Research Center, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Bristol, and the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His main research interests are in trustworthy AI, machine learning, and pattern recognition. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier CSSI and as a senior associate editor or associate editor for four renowned international journals. He has published one English-language monograph on machine learning, edited eight English volumes, and holds over 30 patents. To date, he has published over 260 academic papers in leading international journals or conferences, including IEEE-TPAMI, IEEE-TIP, IEEE-TNNLS, JMLR, NeurIPS, ICCV, AAAI, CVPR, ICML, etc.

Professor Shugong Xu

Professor Shugong Xu is a Full Professor in the Department of Intelligent Science at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), where he previously served as the Associate Vice President for Research and Impact and Executive Dean of the XJTLU-JITRI Academy of Industrial Technology until the end of 2025. An IEEE Fellow (2016), he holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), and a B.S. from Wuhan University. With a distinguished career spanning over 30 years, Prof. Xu has spent half of his career in premier industrial research labs, including Sharp Labs of America, Huawei 2012 Labs, and Intel Labs. Prior to joining XJTLU, he was a Full Professor at Shanghai University. A pioneer in AI, pattern recognition, and wireless communications, his landmark contributions include core patents for the 3GPP 4G standard, catalyzing the IEEE 802.11s standard, and proposing the foundational “Channel Foundation Model” (CFM) for 6G Native AI. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, holds 80+ patents, and has received numerous accolades, including the National Innovation Leadership Talent Award and the First Prize in Shanghai’s Natural Science Award. His current research focuses on domain-specific foundation models, multimodal sensing, and AI for drug design.

Professor Jimin Xiao

Dr. Jimin XIAO is a professor in the department of intelligent science. He received the B.S and M.E degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Nanjing, China, in 2004, 2007, respectively. He received PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Electronics from University of Liverpool, UK, in 2013. From Nov. 2013- Nov.2014, he was a senior researcher in the Department of Signal Processing, Tampere University of Technology, Finland, and an external researcher in Nokia Research Center, Tampere, Finland. In Dec.2014, he joined Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University as a faculty member. His research interests are in the areas of image/video processing, computer vision, deep learning. He has published 100+ papers in prestigious venues, such as TPAMI, IJCV, TIP, TMM, TCSVT, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, AAAI, IJCAI. In the past years, he has successfully attracted over 7 million research funds from both academia and industry, including NSFC general programme, NSFC key programme and National Key RD program of China. He was awarded “Highly-Demanded Talent of Universities and Institutions in Suzhou” in 2016, Jiangsu 333 Talent in 2022.

Senior Associate Professor   Rui Yang

Rui Yang received his Ph.D. degree and B.Eng degree from National University of Singapore (NUS). His research centers on Intelligent Control and Optimization, with special interests in pattern recognition (PR), artificial neural networks (ANN), transfer learning (TL), deep learning (DL), brain-computer interface (BCI), human-machine interaction (HMI), and cognitive computation (CC). Dr. Yang serves as Associate Editor for esteemed international SCI indexed journals, including IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (IF=5.6), Neurocomputing (IF=5.5), and Cognitive Computation (IF=4.3). He is the Founding Director of The Centre for Intelligent Control and Optimization (the XJTLU-AUO Collaborative Research Centre), and is named a Highly Ranked Scholar (top 0.05%) in Transfer Learning by ScholarGPS, ranking 8th globally over the past five years.

Associate Professor Shengchen Li

Graduating from the world-famous Centre for Digital Music (C4DM), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), Shengchen Li has focused on machine listening techniques on various types of signals, including music, acoustic, and biomedical signals. Being a pianist at a young age, Shengchen has a special interest in computer music research, including but not limited to automatic music generation, computational musicology and objective evaluation of piano performance. His fellow students have named among the winner / top-ranked teams of IEEE AASP Data Challenge on Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE), which is a competitive and top-ranked data challenge in acoustic signal processing society, in the year of 2018-2021. Shengchen is currently the leader of the research group on machine learning and data analytics. He is also a senior member of IEEE.

Associate Professor  Yaran Chen

Dr. Yaran Chen is a faculty member at XJTLU, having previously served as an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Her research focuses on embodied AI, robot planning, and VLA. A highly decorated researcher with over 60 publications (h-index 20) and multiple Best Paper awards, she has led major projects for the NSFC and industry partners like Huawei and Tencent, and secured championships in prominent international AI competitions such as ALFRED and the ICRA DJI RoboMaster Challenge.

Associate Professor  Shan Liang

Dr. Shan Liang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Intelligent Science at XJTLU. Holding a Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA), he previously spent a decade there as an Assistant and Associate Professor. His research focuses on speech/audio processing, voice spoofing detection, and LLM-based human-computer interaction. An award-winning researcher (ICASSP) with over 50 publications and multiple patents, his work is widely utilized by major tech companies, including Huawei, Tencent, and Didi.

Associate Professor  Fangyu Wu

Dr. Fangyu Wu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Intelligent Science at XJTLU. Following her Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool and postdoctoral research at Zhejiang University, her work focuses on deep learning, multi-modal learning, and AI for Culture. Recognized as a Gusu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Leading Talent, she has authored over 40 publications in premier venues, including CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, and IEEE Transactions.

 Associate Professor  Junjie Zhang

Dr. Junjie Zhang is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Intelligent Science, School of Advanced Technology, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), and he has been awarded the talent honor of Jiangsu Qinglan Project Youth Backbone Educator. He earned his Ph.D. in Information Technology from the University of Technology Sydney. Before joining XJTLU, he held a postdoctoral position at the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, The University of Adelaide, and served as a Lecturer at Shanghai University. His research interests include computer vision, machine learning, and embodied AI, with a focus on multi-modal learning, remote sensing interpretation, and object perception. Dr. Zhang has published high-quality papers, including top-tier journals and conferences IEEE Trans, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, AAAI etc. His research has been supported by both government and industry, including the NSFC, Jiangsu Science and Technology Fundamental Research Plan, and State Grid etc.

 Assistant Professor Haochuan Jiang

Dr. Haochuan Jiang is an Assistant Professor at the XJTLU School of Robotics and holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Liverpool. With a diverse background spanning academia (University of Edinburgh) and industry (Tencent, ECOVACS), his research centers on deep learning, computer vision, medical image analysis, and generative models.

Assistant Professor  Yuyao Yan 

Dr. Yuyao Yan is an Assistant Professor at XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool. Bridging academia and industry, he previously founded an equipment company and served as a tech research manager. His research focuses on 3D computer vision, text-image synthesis, and pattern recognition.

Assistant Professor Guanyu Yang

Dr. Guanyu Yang is an Assistant Professor at XJTLU and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool. Previously a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Duke Kunshan University, his research focuses on computer vision, pattern recognition, and deep learning, with specialized expertise in few-shot and zero-shot learning, including 3D applications using vision-language models.

Assistant Professor  Sichen Liu

Dr. Sichen Liu is an Assistant Professor in the School of Advanced Technology at XJTLU. Holding a Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and bringing industry experience as a former Tencent Research Scientist, her work focuses on AI for audio, sound event detection, and speech enhancement. She has authored over 20 top-tier publications, leads NSFC-funded projects, and has successfully deployed several of her acoustic AI systems in real-world industrial applications.

Assistant Professor  Chunchuan Lyu

Dr. Chunchuan Lyu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Intelligent Science at XJTLU. With a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh and postdoctoral experience at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, his research journey spans adversarial examples, computational semantics, and structured prediction. He also brings industry experience from research internships at Amazon and IBM. Driven by a passion for exploring new ideas, his current primary research interest is unsupervised reinforcement learning, alongside natural language processing.

Assistant Professor    Jia Wang

Dr. Jia Wang is currently an Assistant Professor in Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. She received a Ph.D. degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, M.S. degree from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, B.S. degree in communication engineering from Beijing Jiao Tong University. She had visited the University of Southern California as a visiting scholar. Her research interests broadly span data mining, recommendation systems, advertising algorithms, search algorithms, and Explainable AI (XAI), with a focus on developing controllable and efficient solutions for large-scale recommendation applications.

Assistant Professor   Siyue Yu

Dr. Siyue Yu graduated from Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) with a bachelors degree. In December 2022, she received her Ph.D. at the University of Liverpool (Electrical and Electronic Engineering). She was supervised by Prof. Jimin Xiao and Prof. Eng Gee Lim during her PhD. She joined XJTLU in January 2023 as a lecturer. During her doctoral period, she has been researching computer vision, including video object segmentation, weakly supervised salient object detection, and co-salient object detection. She has published papers in CVPR, AAAI, TPAMI and other internationally renowned authoritative conferences or journals, including three papers as the first author. She also serves as a reviewer for several journals and conferences including TPAMI, TIP, and CVPR.
