About

The academic staff of the Department of Applied Linguistics and Language Sciences consists of experienced teachers and committed researchers across diverse areas of language science—including applied linguistics and linguistics, translation and interpreting, and literary studies.

Our staff constantly publish academic books and chapters with distinguished publishers and articles in leading journals. We conduct research projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, the United Kingdom Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Foreign Education Research Committee of the Jiangsu Higher Education Association, the Jiangsu provincial government, the Foreign Affairs Office of Suzhou Industrial Park, China International Communication Group, National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education, and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, among others.

Our teaching is firmly rooted in our research. The Department is dedicated to the systematic study of language in all its forms, and our research-led courses allow students to engage with the latest thinking on a wide range of intellectual traditions, including various quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. We encourage students to think critically about complex topics, to appreciate different perspectives, and to present their ideas in various formats, using fluent and persuasive methods.

Our innovative and practice-based modules provide students with authentic academic experiences and develop their essential skills, enabling them to adapt to the dynamic working environments of the Digital Age. Students benefit from specialist facilities on XJTLU’s South Campus, including translation and interpreting laboratories and the Language and Cognition Laboratory, which support learning and research in areas such as simultaneous interpreting, computer-aided translation, psycholinguistics, and eye-tracking. Our students gain hands-on experience by participating in a wide variety of yearly extra-curricular events involving translation, language education, and literary arts, all sponsored by the department.

Our research values diversity, inclusiveness, and cross-disciplinarity. In today’s global and digital world, our work speaks directly to real-world challenges. Our staff members value collaboration. We work closely with colleagues throughout the schools of XJTLU, with our sister departments at the University of Liverpool, and with partners beyond the University through research collaboration and PhD co-supervision. We welcome doctoral researchers into a diverse and growing postgraduate community.
