The Department of Applied Linguistics and Language Sciences is home to a vibrant, dynamic, and dedicated team of local and global scholars. It is integral to the strong teaching, learning, and research culture of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The Department is dedicated to systematic and innovative studies of languages, texts, and language usage in all its forms. Under the unifying theme of Language Sciences, we bring together three subject areas as a whole: Applied Linguistics and Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting, and literary studies.
Our research values diversity, inclusiveness, and cross-disciplinarity. Our faculty bring together expertise from a wide range of fields such as translation education, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, audio-visual translation, communication, computational linguistics, multilingualism, sociolinguistics, cultural translation, translation technology, interpreting studies, language learning and teaching, as well as romanticism and gothic studies, comparative literature, and literature and AI. In today’s global and digital world, our work speaks directly to real-world challenges in cross-cultural communication, education, social inclusion, healthcare, technology, and many other vital areas.
The Department is committed to research-led teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Staff teach across four BA programmes, two MA programmes, and supervise a growing cohort of PhD students. We aim to develop students into high-calibre, effective professionals and scholars, for example, language scientists, interpreters, business professionals with cross-cultural insight and multilingual capacities, and cultural negotiators who will bring China to the world and the world to China.
As part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, we value interdisciplinary learning and global perspectives. We warmly welcome students from around the world to join us!
