The Digital Translation and Interpreting Laboratory of the Department of Applied Linguistics and Language Sciences supports teaching, training, research, and professional practice in translation and interpreting. It provides an integrated environment for interpreting, translation technology, audiovisual translation, localisation, terminology management, corpus-based translation practice, and AI-assisted language services.
The laboratory’s interpreting facilities include the Sanako Lab Simultaneous Interpretation Training System (STS) with 34 user workstations, 12 observer stations, and eight simultaneous interpreting booths with capacity for 16 interpreters. These facilities support classroom teaching, interpreting practice, mock conferences, and multilingual simultaneous interpreting activities.
The laboratory also supports hands-on training in translation technology and professional language-service workflows. Students work with CAT tools such as SDL Trados Studio and memoQ, while also gaining hands-on experience with translation memories, termbases, corpus resources, and project-based translation workflows. The laboratory further supports audiovisual translation and media localisation training through OOONA, a professional cloud-based platform for subtitling, captioning, translation management, review, and audio description.
In line with XJTLU’s commitment to AI-enhanced education, the Digital Translation and Interpreting Laboratory of the Department of Applied Linguistics and Language Sciences serves as a key platform for digital translation and interpreting education. Students learn with the help of advanced facilities and technologies, including translation and interpreting laboratories, an AI-assisted cloud translation platform, an eye-tracking laboratory, and an audiovisual translation platform. These facilities support interpreting training, AI-assisted translation practice, audiovisual translation and media localisation, terminology and corpus-based research training, and the development of digital resources for cross-cultural knowledge mediation.
The BA Translation and Interpreting programme’s Multimodal Translation Empowered by Digital Intelligence platform was selected for the Ministry of Education of China’s Virtual Simulation Teaching Innovation Laboratory initiative, becoming the first XJTLU platform to receive this recognition. This further strengthens the role of the Digital Translation and Interpreting Laboratory as a platform for teaching innovation, professional training, and future-facing translation and interpreting education. Teaching is led by accomplished professionals with strong academic credentials and extensive industry experience.
By integrating interpreting systems, CAT tools, audiovisual translation software, corpus and terminology resources, and AI-supported learning scenarios, the Digital Translation and Interpreting Laboratory provides students with a professional, research-informed, and future-facing environment for developing translation and interpreting competence.
