The Department of Applied Linguistics is dedicated to the systematic study of language in all its forms. Linguistics helps us understand how languages work, how they are learned, and how they shape human thoughts and interactions, among other things. Our faculty bring together expertise from a wide range of linguistic fields, such as sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, and language learning and teaching. In today’s global and digital world, our work speaks directly to real-world challenges in communication, education, social inclusion, healthcare, technology, and many other vital areas.
The Department of Applied Linguistics is committed to research-led teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We contribute to four BA programmes offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences: Applied Linguistics, English and Business, English and Communication Studies, and English Studies in Global Context. We also offer two MA programmes: MA TESOL and MA Applied Linguistics (specialisation in multilingualism), and supervise PhD projects in areas related to Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.
As part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, we value interdisciplinary learning and global perspectives. We warmly welcome students from around the world to join us!
