The Department of Translation and Interpreting is located on XJTLU’s South Campus, with excellent learning and teaching facilities as well as two specialist laboratories. Its dedicated interpreting laboratory uses the Sanako Lab Simultaneous Interpretation Training System (STS) and is equipped with 34 user working stations, 12 observers’ stations and eight simultaneous interpreting booths with a capacity to host 16 interpreters. It can also accommodate international conferences that require multilingual simultaneous interpreting services.

Students use the lab to hone their simultaneous interpreting skills, learning how to listen to speech in one language and interpret it in real-time into another. The department also has a computer-aided translation laboratory, running professional translation software such as SDL Trados Studio and MemoQ. Together with training material and other tools, the lab supports students in gaining confidence in using various Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, giving them the ability to draw on corpus data, as well as experience in term-bank development and maintenance of translation memory databases.
