Two academic staff from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University were elected to the Document Image Analysis and Recognition Committee (DIARC) of the China Society of Image and Graphics.

Dr Kaizhu Huang, head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at XJTLU, was unanimously elected as deputy secretary-general of DIARC and Dr Qiufeng Wang from the same department was elected to committee member of DIARC at the founding of DIARC at a conference in Beijing.

Experts and scholars from national research institutions and recognised universities, including the Institution of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University and Peking University attended DIARC. There were also technical experts from industry including Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba who joined this committee.

DIARC at China Society of Image and Graphics was initiated by Chenglin Liu, vice director of the Institution of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This committee aims to solve critical scientific issues in document image analysis and recognition.

Dr Kaizhu Huang (pictured above) said: “As one of the most important committees in China Society of Image and Graphics, the committee of document image analysis and recognition will effectively promote basic research and usage in artificial intelligence.

“This election indicates that XJTLU’s achievements and research in the field of image recognition and artificial intelligence are recognised by external peers and experts. This will facilitate XJTLU to take part in the significant national project of artificial intelligence and promote research development at XJTLU.

As the deputy secretary-general of the committee, Dr Huang will be in charge of daily work of the committee, organising and arranging communication in the field of document image analysis and recognition and providing a good communication and cooperation platform for researchers and engineers within this discipline.

Dr Qiufeng Wang (pictured below), as a member of the committee, will support the secretary-general to carry out daily work, take part in setting up the platform for communication and cooperation, assist in organising seminars and promote the development of document image analysis and recognition.

Dr Kaizhu Huang joined XJTLU in 2012 and he has had a series of achievements in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. He has published over 120 papers with approximately 50 papers published in international journals and also won the Asian Pacific Neural Network Society (APNNS) Young Researcher Award in 2011.

Dr Qiufeng Wang joined XJTLU in 2017. He received his PhD degree in National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2012 and won the President Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences in the same year. He has been engaged in the field of document analysis and identification since being a postgraduate student and published papers in international journals including IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (IEEE-PAMI).

The Document Image Analysis and Recognition Committee of the China Society of Image and Graphics focuses on academic research, communication and application development. It brings together well-known experts from the domestic academic and industry circles to drive the development of document image analysis and recognition, promote China’s international influence and discourse in this field, and provide technical support for the development of China, its society and people’s livelihoods.
