Summary: On 8 April, China Youth Daily and Xinhua Daily reported on the inaugural seminar of the Professional Committee on Infant and Child Care and Development held in Suzhou. The committee is overseen by the Chinese Association for Improving Birth Outcomes and Child Development, and the event was jointly organised by Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the committee.

“This seminar is of great significance,” said Professor Qiuling Chao, deputy director of the Committee, Party Committee Secretary, and Vice President for Student Affairs and Information at XJTLU. “XJTLU is a new type of Sino-foreign cooperative education institution that not only thinks about higher education, but also has a new strategic layout for basic education focusing on three aspects: professional cultivation, scientific research and social services.”

Dr Qijian Xie, Director of the Student Affairs Office and the Student Admissions and Career Development Office of XJTLU, discussed XJTLU’s teaching mode. Two students, Ziyi Shi and Kairui Bai, talked about their experiences and thoughts.

Summary: According to a report from Xinhua Daily, on 19 April, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education issued a notice on the pilot work of 2021 comprehensive evaluation admission reform. Twenty-three universities will carry out comprehensive evaluation in Jiangsu, including Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (a B-class university).

Summary: On 2 April, China Youth Daily reported that two undergraduate and six postgraduate programmes proposed by XJTLU have recently been approved by the Ministry of Education in China. The new programmes will launch in the autumn of 2021, covering the subjects of micro-electronics, biopharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, and education.

The two approved undergraduate programmes are BEng Microelectronics Science and Engineering with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism and BSc Applied Statistics; the six approved postgraduate programmes are MSc Applied Statistics, MRes Medicinal Chemistry, MA Child Development and Family Education, MSc Human-Computer Interaction, MSc Actuarial Science, and MA Applied Linguistics (with specialisation in multilingualism).

This, in turn, is promoting the spread of knowledge and ideas related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Headline: Guiding principles to support students on campus and overseas through hybrid teaching

Summary: On 6 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Markus Davis of XJTLU Global about how XJTLU created a Best Practice Guide for Online Learning, which highlights community and student experience and online teaching methodologies and tools. Davis notes flexibility, inclusion and empathy underlie the guide’s ‘rules’ for practice.

Summary: On 8 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Dr Eddy Fang, Professor Ewout van der Schaft, and Patricia Pieterse about how International Business School Suzhou, like other parts of the University, has worked to ensure equitable and quality education for students who continue to study only online. They provided examples including implementing more student feedback and using technology to enhance interaction with students
abroad.

Summary: On 16 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Ling Xia and Yao Wu of XJTLU’s School of Languages. In it, they explained how over a three-year period, approximately 200 language teachers successfully transitioned from paper to online assessment, reducing paper use dramatically.

Summary: On 21 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Dr Ellen Touchstone of XJTLU’s International Business School Suzhou. Dr Touchstone provided examples from XJTLU about how universities can use online education to educate students about the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
