The Academy will offer masters and PhD programmes aimed to develop professionals with industry and innovation skills who can work across disciplines to lead modern industries.

Summary: On 8 April, China Youth Daily and Xinhua Daily reported on the inaugural seminar of the Professional Committee on Infant and Child Care and Development held in Suzhou. The committee is overseen by the Chinese Association for Improving Birth Outcomes and Child Development, and the event was jointly organised by Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the committee.

“This seminar is of great significance,” said Professor Qiuling Chao, deputy director of the Committee, Party Committee Secretary, and Vice President for Student Affairs and Information at XJTLU. “XJTLU is a new type of Sino-foreign cooperative education institution that not only thinks about higher education, but also has a new strategic layout for basic education focusing on three aspects: professional cultivation, scientific research and social services.”

Summary: On 30 March, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported on the signing ceremony of the education cooperation project between XJTLU and the OCT Shendong Group and Princeton International Education Group.

Based on their respective strengths, the three parties will create an “international education and talent highland” and “talent education ecosystem” in Shenzhen Eastern Overseas China Town.

4. The status quo of studying abroad in the post-pandemic era

Summary: According to a report in Xinhua Daily on 21 April, as vaccination rates rise globally, Chinese students increasingly are receiving news that their studies in foreign universities will resume. But the conversation about studying abroad is far from over, and questions remain – what other obstacles will the students face? What are the future trends for students who want to study abroad? The public is also keeping an eye on these questions.

Dr Qijian Xie, Director of the Student Affairs Office and the Student Admissions and Career Development Office of XJTLU, discussed XJTLU’s teaching mode. Two students, Ziyi Shi and Kairui Bai, talked about their experiences and thoughts.

Summary: On 29 March, China Daily reported on the second in the XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy’s lecture series. Dr Zhizhong Li, the co-founder of Shiyu Children Foundation, was invited and talked about the application, challenges, and the prospects of precision medicine in the treatment of childhood cancer.

6. Comprehensive evaluation admissions

Headline: Pilot projects on the 2021 comprehensive evaluation admissions to be launched in Jiangsu

Summary: According to a report from Xinhua Daily, on 19 April, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education issued a notice on the pilot work of 2021 comprehensive evaluation admission reform. Twenty-three universities will carry out comprehensive evaluation in Jiangsu, including Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (a B-class university).

Summary: On 20 April, Southcn reported that Guangdong plans to launch pilot projects on the 2021 comprehensive evaluation admission based on the college entrance exam at ten universities, including Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

7. Eight undergraduate and postgraduate programmes approved by the MoE

Summary: On 2 April, China Youth Daily reported that two undergraduate and six postgraduate programmes proposed by XJTLU have recently been approved by the Ministry of Education in China. The new programmes will launch in the autumn of 2021, covering the subjects of micro-electronics, biopharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, and education.

The two approved undergraduate programmes are BEng Microelectronics Science and Engineering with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism and BSc Applied Statistics; the six approved postgraduate programmes are MSc Applied Statistics, MRes Medicinal Chemistry, MA Child Development and Family Education, MSc Human-Computer Interaction, MSc Actuarial Science, and MA Applied Linguistics (with specialisation in multilingualism).

READING IN SUZHOU:

Summary: On 23 April, Reading in Suzhou reported on the opening ceremony of the 16th Suzhou Reading Festival. At the ceremony, Professor Youmin Xi, Executive President of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, shared his experiences. Professor Xi also introduced his new book—The Barely Known Stories of Management of XJTLU, which is about the experience of running a Sino-foreign university.

Headline: Using digital technology to assist the spread of knowledge and ideas about the SDGs

Summary: On 31 March, THE Campus published Professor Gisela Loehlein’s video about how XJTLU’s experience with online events and activities of the United Nations Uni Habitat Network and Academic Impact Network has rapidly linked XJTLU’s students and educators to leaders, experts and other organisations worldwide. This, in turn, is promoting the spread of knowledge and ideas related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION-Campus:

Headline: Guiding principles to support students on campus and overseas through hybrid teaching

Summary: On 6 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Markus Davis of XJTLU Global about how XJTLU created a Best Practice Guide for Online Learning, which highlights community and student experience and online teaching methodologies and tools. Davis notes flexibility, inclusion and empathy underlie the guide’s ‘rules’ for practice.

Headline: Delivering blended learning to work for all students, everywhere

Summary: On 8 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Dr Eddy Fang, Professor Ewout van der Schaft, and Patricia Pieterse about how International Business School Suzhou, like other parts of the University, has worked to ensure equitable and quality education for students who continue to study only online. They provided examples including implementing more student feedback and using technology to enhance interaction with students
abroad.

Headline: Greener assessment: transitioning to online marking

Summary: On 16 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Ling Xia and Yao Wu of XJTLU’s School of Languages. In it, they explained how over a three-year period, approximately 200 language teachers successfully transitioned from paper to online assessment, reducing paper use dramatically.

Headline:How to ensure online education is a clear win for the SDGs

Summary: On 21 April, Times Higher Education-Campus published an article by Dr Ellen Touchstone of XJTLU’s International Business School Suzhou. Dr Touchstone provided examples from XJTLU about how universities can use online education to educate students about the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Headline: Sino-Italian collaboration promotes sustainable development in Guangzhou

Summary: On 16 April, News GD reported on an event held in Guangzhou titled "Italian Research Day: Sino-Italian Collaboration toward a Greener Future", which aimed to underline the importance of global sustainability.
