XJTLU is 147th in Young University Rankings

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has been ranked 147th in Times Higher Education’s Young University Rankings, which lists 474 of the world’s best universities under 50 years old.

This year is the first that XJTLU is on the list, and it is one of only eight institutions from the Chinese mainland to make the cut. Last year, the rankings had six universities from the Chinese mainland, and XJTLU is the higher-ranked of the two new entries.

Of the worldwide new entries to the list, XJTLU is ranked eleventh highest.

Different needs

To determine the latest rankings, THE measured universities based on the same areas as their World University Rankings: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

However, to reflect the priorities and advantages of young universities, THE weighted certain things differently. For example, in the World University Rankings, results of THE’s reputation survey accounts for 15% of a university’s grade in the teaching segment. For young universities, it only accounts for 10%. Conversely, an aspect like the student-to-staff ratio carries a heavier weighting, with 6% of the final grading rather than 4.5%.

Young, Asian and Emerging

In addition to THE’s Young University Rankings, XJTLU has been added to several of the organisation's other lists. In 2021, XJTLU ranked:

• 122nd in THE’s Asian University Rankings
• 112th in THE’s Emerging Economy University Rankings
• in the 601-800 band of THE’s World University Rankings
