The Centre, founded by XJTLU, offers two-year postdoctoral positions with a total compensation of at least 600,000 RMB over the course of the appointment. In addition, various forms of financial support are available, including a living allowance of 180,000 RMB over the two years provided by the Suzhou municipal government and Suzhou Industrial Park.

Postdoctoral researchers can also benefit from project grants such as the National Postdoctoral Innovative Talents Support Programme, among others, with the possibility of receiving additional incentives.

Outstanding postdoctoral researchers may also be prioritised for formal academic staff positions within the different departments of XJTLU upon completion of their project.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to email their resumes and proof of academic achievements for the past three years, in English, to the project supervisor.

Professor Fei Ma, Associate Vice President for Research and Impact at XJTLU, says: “Our University is committed to offering postdoctoral researchers exceptional research conditions, abundant resources, and a conducive academic environment. The XJTLU Technology Transfer Centre platform aims to enhance the advancement of industrial innovation research and foster the overall development of research at the University.”

Current experience

Dr Jinxin Gu, who completed his PhD at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is currently engaged in postdoctoral research on the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases and the development of related pharmaceuticals at XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy, part of the XJTLU Technology Transfer Centre.

In 2023, Dr Gu was selected to be part of the Outstanding Postdoctoral Programme in Jiangsu province. This programme, introduced by the Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security in 2022, is aligned with the evolving needs of integrating talent into industry, with a strong focus on promoting in-depth integration within the industrial, innovation, and talent sectors.

Dr Jinxin Gu, a current postdoc at XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy

Shortly before completing his doctoral studies, Dr Gu learned about the collaboration between XJTLU and Suzhou Industrial Park, which led to the establishment of XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy. He saw this as a tremendous opportunity.

He says: “Suzhou’s biopharmaceutical industry has been growing rapidly and is ranked among the top in China, alongside Beijing and Shanghai. Suzhou Industrial Park is aiming to build a world-class biopharmaceutical innovation hub, positioning itself as a global biopharmaceutical industry hub and a centre of excellence. This is really appealing to anyone engaged in biopharmaceutical research.

“The establishment of the Academy coincided with the swift growth of the biopharmaceutical industry in Suzhou Industrial Park, fostering close partnerships with biopharmaceutical companies. Additionally, XJTLU is renowned for its international outlook and innovative educational approach, which played a pivotal role in drawing me to the University,” says Dr Gu.

According to Professor Lei Fu, the Executive Dean and a mentor for postdoctoral researchers at XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy, the two-year postdoctoral programmes are an indispensable part of the professional development of young researchers.

“Postdoctoral experience serves as a preparatory phase for future independent research and the role of an independent Principal Investigator (PI). Says Professor Fu. “This is our guiding principle for postdoctoral recruitment and our aim of cultivating research talent.”
