The Department of Urban Planning and Design is a dynamic and international department that combines the best of urban planning and design theory, with the specifics of practice in the rapidly urbanising Chinese environment. Owing to Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool’s unique location and education system, our department provides students one of the most fascinating urban planning environments in the world.
Urban planning and design deals with making better places for people. It considers the nature of human settlement and how places should be shaped from a range of perspectives. This is reflected in our Department’s research activities and the expertise of our academic staff.
Students studying urban planning and design develop understanding of the processes of spatial change in the built and natural environment and engage the arguments for intervening in these processes. Students develop the knowledge and skills to analyse, critique and ultimately contribute to the sustainability of urban and rural development both in China and around the world.
