Research in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering aims to develop leading-edge solutions to real-world problems by investigating rigorous theory and applied approaches. With extensive international experience, our highly recognised staff members are actively engaged in research of international quality.

Our current expertise includes:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Cyber physical systems
  • Data mining
  • e-commerce and financial computing
  • Energy harvesting
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Image processing and computer vision
  • Networking
  • Operating systems
  • Robotics.

We have a considerable number of research publications in top international journals and conferences, including those sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Many of our staff act as editors and reviewers of a wide range of academic journals and conferences. The Department has a record of successfully attracting funding from various local, provincial, national, and international sources, such as the European Union and National Natural Science Foundation of China. We have also collaborated with industry for practical projects, contributing to the community and bringing hands-on experience to our staff and students. We have collaborators in China as well as across Asia, Europe and North America.

We engage our students in research at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and under the supervision of our staff, our students have published their research outcomes. Our PhD programme gives suitably-qualified students the chance to address important problems and challenges in computing.
