This research-intensive programme develops advanced skills, education and training in the areas of artificial intelligence research, including pattern recognition, computer vision, machine intelligence, and intelligent systems.

With a strong emphasis on hands-on experience and practical skills development, you will gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of topics such as advanced pattern recognition, deep learning in computer vision, image and video processing, and reinforcement learning.

After successfully completing all taught modules, students are required to carry out a one-year-long research project.

Knowledge and skills

By the time you graduate from the MRes Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems, you will be able to:

  • use knowledge and theories to solve practical problems in the field of image processing, video processing, and computer vision;
  • use mathematical knowledge and theories to solve practical problems in the field of pattern recognition, machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning;
  • demonstrate a deep understanding of research methods and creative problem-solving skills: identifying engineering problems and the critical analysis, design and implementation of an innovative solution;
  • work productively with improved organisation, information handling and project management skills.

  • Additional learning activities

    The completion of additional learning activities is required to obtain your master degree. The programme includes a total of 600 hours of Additional Learning Activities, most of which are chosen individually by students. Normally, required ALA hours will be distributed evenly across each semester, amounting to 200 hours per semester. Part-time programmes will normally require 100 to 150 hours per semester. They should normally be spread equally over teaching semesters and the summer and winter breaks.


There is huge market demand for research expertise in the areas of pattern recognition, machine intelligence, deep learning, and computer vision.

Graduates from this programme will be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to go on to doctoral training or professional practice in research & development engineering companies such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Baidu, Alibaba or Tencent.
